Really?! It's a nice auction but I didn't see that much "mindblowing" material compared to prior years or compared to typical NGSA, NAC, or Maison Palombo auctions. Perhaps I'm biased because Triton XXIII is very light in the provincial department and they didn't even give them a separate category! There's no longer a box to click to show provincials .
This and the other recent sales including those mentioned by TIF really make it hard to keep a straight face when people call these things rare. Who is buying all those $10k+ coins?
Unfortunately, there are too many collectors out there with very deep pockets Which makes it hard for guys like you and I to compete. In ten years from now, the 10K+ coins will be going for 100K+. Many of these so called rarities like the AV Staters from Lydia are certainly not hard to find in auctions. However, US coins in the 10K+ category, like the 1857-S Double Eagle (1000s in MS) quality still fetch over 10K. I guess its supply vs demand, and the latter keeps increasing, while the supply is very limited.
I don't even bother with these auctions. As a buyer of mostly sub-$250 coins I stick to places where I can find plenty of budget appropriate coins to either outright buy or bid on. I think I only have 7 or 8 coins that breach the $500 barrier, which makes Triton fairly easy for me to ignore.
I thought it was just me , but I don't like CNG's new site either. I also don't like the new Sixbid site. I find them cluttered and claustrophobic. I also find the filters on Sixbid poorly functional. Reminds me of an old Roman saying, " Si non est fractum, noli id reficere" or... If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Yes, the medievals are stunning! The "Low Countries" are my fav./ but some really nice Italian mints too I agree, the site should have been left as it was....
Some of the coins are awesome. But I thought last year's was more impressive, actually. I like the new site. It is more in keeping with the features other auction houses provide. The "Watch" functionality alone is worth it.
I agree with both savitale and TIF: this Triton is noticeably not as large as in prior years, probably because there isn't a Gasvoda or Adams-sized collection being sold. That's not to say it doesn't have great coins in it but "never seen as much mindblowing material" simply isn't accurate, even relative to other sales this year.
I have no allusions of winning anything at the Triton sale. It is a good pedigree to have in one's collection, but the extent of the hype extends the hammer price beyond what the same coins would bring at any other major sale. This said, there are always exceptions that warrant watching the live bidding.
At least by getting their material on line early, it gives us a bit of time to save up some $$$$ Too bad, that Tkalec AG is not around anymore, I got some really nice coins from them in past. Numismatic Fine Arts catalogues got me started into the ancient world, still have those and the coins
The Phanes stater is listed in Triton as the 7th known. I have 12 examples in my files (including several exhibited in the Israel Museum but not seen in sales), and they keep coming.
