Why do you collect coins?

Are you a silver hoarder or gold collector too then? :) I had a phase of buying silver bars, as many as I could get, but in the end I sold them. Was nice having a big pile of solid silver though.

I collect coins for the sheer pleasure of holding a piece of history in my hands. Mostly U.S. coins, but also German and Welsh in honor of our lineage. Hopefully my daughter will appreciate the historical value when I pass them on to her. I've tried to collect most all denominations of the German States and to the present, from Deniers to Thalers with many in between. Fascinating history of changing values from the 1600's to today. Incredible coins (most cheaply made) during the economic crisis in the early 1920's when a million marks would barely buy a loaf of bread!

Best way is to go to the Forums tab at the top and make a posting in Announcements and tell us a little bit about yourself. I'm sure you will pick it up fast. BTW, no need to do a survey... Welcome to CT if you want to tag someone, just preface their name with an@ like @Ronald Norris

Here's something from Dave Bowers- a man who probably knows something about coin collectors.

"...Monaghan went on to quote Susan M. Pearce, a professor at the University of Leicester, England, who suggested that 'collecting is a way of creating self-identity.'"

    **********************************************
[My note: I believe Jung called that the projection of spirit into matter]
    **********************************************

Bowers: "Few would argue with this, and in numismatics this has been proven time and again. Having handled as many important coins as anyone I know, I can state that of the countless collections I have purchased intact or sold at auction over the years, no two have ever been alike."

"From the very word 'go' collecting coins is an individual pursuit. If I were to give two collectors each $500 today, chances would be good that not even a single coin in a given grade would be duplicated between the two buyers. Even if I gave $50,000 the same would be true. Every collection is very personal, reflecting the taste of the owner."

I honestly dont remember why I started collecting. I think it was the massive stoneware jug my mother kept and dumped all here pennies in. At some point I learned about Flying Eagle cents and spent (days? weeks?) digging through it one-by-one looking for Indian Head cents and an elusive Flying Eagle. Never found one, but I think there were IHC and lots of Canadian pennies. From there, interest took off. I went for IHC and later American Silver Eagles. At one point I bought a TPG graded Buffalo Nickel, long long before I even knew what a TPG was.

Of course, girls and AOL in ~1993 ruined all that. The sweet sweet sound of a dial up modem.

Small valuable old shinny things I guess is what brought me back. I've always collected, and probably always will.

They are the only artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome I can afford. Through my coins, I see the world through the ancients' eyes -- their gods and goddesses, myths, achievements, values, virtues, and artistic tastes.

I have been collecting coins for over 50 years. My interest started increasing in collectible coins when silver coins were replaced with cupronickel coins in 1965. I collected primarily numismatic coins for many years. I still do to some extent. Most coins that I want, and can afford, I already have. So, now I combine my interest of coins and bullion, by collecting 90% junk silver. By sticking with junk silver, silver eagles, etc., I feel I will have more liquidity when it is time to sell. Where the numismatic coins will take longer and more effort to liquidate. I have evolved through many different phases during my coin collecting history.

That's what I am doing, sorting them into 19 groups for the great grandchildren. Need 1 more for number 20 due in June.

There's no joy in collectin junk silver. You throw it in a pile. Then you weigh it and then never look at it again. Yeah

Spend my money on family members. Collect on pocket change mostly. Not doing as well as Shiela with her 82 and 84 finds. I could be next.
