A great set of coins @furryfrog02. Victory on Gordian, Neptune and Carthage all top picks for me. Best wishes for year 2!
Nice eclectic top ten there FF02, a cracking first year haul. If I had to choose 1 it would be the Nerva, not the usual huge snotter on this one but more like " post rhinoplasty " surgery, I like it. Hope 2020 is as good for you as 2019 was.
You did way better then me in my first year! Congratulations on a super 2019 coin haul, you picked up some real beauties. Can hardly wait to see your top ten for 2020 I am still not finished for 2019, better late then never I guess.... John
Nice one This is my year 1 as well, going for 1 more coin in the next few days then I'll be writing my own top 10
@Seattlite86 here is a size comparison as well as a picture showing just how rotated the reverse is. It weighs 10.99g. @Severus Alexander I'm not sure if it is overstruck on an earlier coin but there seems to be something on the reverse around the center of the "M" that could possibly have been an earlier coin.
Nice coins @furryfrog02 - I also like Maurice Tiberius. He was responsible most likely for the compilation and/or writing of the military treatise The Strategikon, which talks about generalship, decision-making, command, and the proper outfitting of the army and horse-mounted archers, where and how to fortify a camp, and sections on each enemy the empire faced - Slavs, Persians, Avars, etc. I have a copy and have read it several times. In a sense it is reminiscent of Tzun-Tzus The Art of War. https://www.amazon.com/Maurices-Strategikon-Handbook-Byzantine-Military/dp/0812217721
furryfrog02, Your selection of 10 coins is interesting & diverse , & reveals an open mind & general interest in ancient history. You may or may not narrow your focus in the future, that's a personal decision. What's important is that you enjoy what you have . If I had to choose a favorite it would be the Constantine X follis. The coin is well struck & has a stunning patina ! My 2nd favorite would be the Maurice Tiberius 40 nummi coin, & I agree with Severus Alexander, it looks like an overstrike. The odd die alignment may have been intentional in an attempt to completely obliterate the image of the host coin; just speculation of course....
Sweet mix of cool coins @furryfrog02 ! I think the Nerva is my fav, a coin of him was one I was really hoping to get this year and I was a bit bummed it didn't pan out...yours would have been a welcome to come live at my house.
Lovely additions @furryfrog02! That nerva is really nice, the portrait is interesting. Usually his nose is really standing out, but yours has a more softer touch. Maybe the person who made the die felt sorry...??
Very nice coins @furryfrog02! The Carthage coin is exactly the sort I would love- plenty of wear, but still attractive and soaked in history. I also like the Byzantine of Maurice Tiberius- I actually remember seeing this coin in Harlan J. Berk's "junk box" at the Baltimore show, and I considered buying it, but decided on a different coin instead. Glad you ended up getting it!
That's a nice Nerva you got – it's actually much better than mine. Congrats to you and your son on what looks like a very good collecting year! Nerva, Roman Empire, denarius, 98 AD, Rome mint. Obv: IMP NERVA CAES AVG GERM PM TR P II, laureate head of Nerva right. Rev: IMP II COS IIII PP, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. 18mm, 2.98g. Ref: RIC II Nerva 44.
Very nice top 10 @furryfrog02 My favourite has to be the Trajan....Lovely toning! Happy hunting for next year...
I love the variety you have, FF! I'm the same way! I really like your #1 Carthage, and your #8 Akragas, but that GIII Victory is gorgeous! Looks like you (and your collecting kin) had a great 2019! I can't wait to see what 2020 has in store!
