What can you Canadian coin collectors tell me about this coin? Approx value? Composition? Anything else? I figure it is probably 0.800 silver. I won it in my local coin shop's weekly bid board auciton. Totally forgot all about it. Thanks. Joe
Mintage of 2,596,465. 11.6638 grams, .800 silver, .3000 ASW. 1988 catalog of world coins (hehehe newest I have)says F-12 $2.50, VF-20 $3, XF-40 $3.75, MS-60 $9, MS-63 $12.50 not a good grader yet, so don't know what grade.
Can you get a closer shot of the date? (particularly the 2?) If it's the wide date variety, then it's worth a little more. (25-50% more)
Value per 2009 Krause: XF-40 bullion value (~$5.25), MS-60 $6, MS-63 $18. Value per Charlton Canadian Coins 2006 Ed. (in Canadian dollars): F-12, $4, VF-20 $5, EF-40 $6, AU-50 $7, MS-60 $15, MS-63 $20, MS-64 $200. Neither Krause nor Charlton mentions any varieties for 1952.
a little interesting history, if your interested.. It Is currently the 100 year anniversary of Canada minting our own coins IN Canada. the first coin was in 1908 and it was a 50 cent piece. nice coin Id say VF 30 to XF 40 in the 2008 book it puts it at 12 - 14 dollars... im telling you guys.. look at that price increase Canadian coins are goin up!
Hey guys, thanks for all your responses. I threw a $4 bid on it. I don't collect foreign coins, but I really liked the reverse design. I figured if nothing else, I would have the silver in it. I just recently purchased the 100yr half dollar comm set from the RCM. Attached below is a really bad zoom job I did of the original pic. I haven't had a chance to retake the pic and zoom in on the date. Once again, thanks for all your help, I know nothing about these.
In Canada, if you never bought a mint set, you would never ever know they even existed. I don't know if they've ever been in circulation... certainly not since I've been around!
Yeah I have never seen a half in circulation. They seemed to circulate at some point though, as my parents have a couple.
