    Hello!

A while back I found a 1947 Canadian penny, and today I was doing some research. I discovered that a 1947 penny that has a maple leaf mint mark indicates it was actually minted in 1948 due to a coin shortage. Other than that I don't know too much about it, or it's worth.

The Maple leaf reverse started in 1937.

Well, poop then. Got any idea what the penny's value is off the top of your head?

"Some 1947 1 cent pieces have a small maple leaf after the date. These were struck in 1948 while the mint was awaiting the production of new dies for the obverse. The inscription was changed from REX ET IND:IMP (King and Emperor of India) to REX in 1948 due to India gaining it’s independence from the British Empire in 1947. So perhaps the biggest significance could be that this coin represented the last year before the collapse of the British Empire began with the independence of India and Pakistan, with the independence of many of it’s former colonies occurring in the next decades to follow." https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-significance-of-a-1947-Canadian-penny

But what you are referencing is kinda, somewhat true.
Canada was waiting for new dies to mark the new legend verbage of India gaining their Independence.

The 1948 dies were modified to remove the "ET IND:IMP" which you see on the obverse of your cent. Unfortunately the cent shortage was due to a delay of these dies as they were being provided by the Royal Mint in London England.

Thus due to the shortage and waiting for the new dies they minted more cents but added a small maple leaf to the reverse (in addition to the BIG on) on the 1947 dies to identify them as 1948ish. The "Maple Leaf" you are referring to is a very small maple leaf to the right of the date, such as in this comparison (it looks more like a star to me).

But looking at your fuzzy images I would guess yours has the small star .. I mean maple leaf to the right of the date.

and if you notice, your coin has the "ET IND:IMP" to the right of the bust.

There are 2 varieties for the maple leaf 1947.
Blunt 7, near maple leaf of which is farther away from the stem.
Pointed 7, near maple leaf top right part of 7 is pointy and close to the steam.
    With a mintage 0f 43,855,448.
Guessing from your out of focus photo yours looks like blunt 7.
My Charlton coin catalog on starts values in AU-50 grade.
I am guessing your coin is XF ?
    AU-50 -$5.00 AU AU-55-$7.00 MS-60-$10.00 in Canadian dollars.

So actually you are correct, your coin was struck in 1948 indicated by the maple leaf mint mark. No extra value for this variety though, a dollar or less in circulated condition.

Coins and Canada lists the blunt 7 as a dollar in xf, the pointed 7 at fifty cents.

Thank you all for the answers! Sorry for the piss poor pictures, but I had to use my phone and it doesn't have the greatest camera.

The mintage for 1947 is lower then 1947 ML. If that helps

I'm looking at a pile of these right now-with and without maple leaf, but I still can't discern that blunt vs pointy. Can anyone help? Please?

Looking at my Charlton Standard catalog it is easy to tell the difference. The pointy 7 top right of the 7 comes to a sharp point. The blunt 7 top right looks like some chopped the top right of the 7 with a chisel making it look like a straight screw driver head.

Found a pic on Bing to show you the difference... the left pic is pointy and the right pic is blunt.
