While going through a unopened 1970's roll from my dads collection I came across this coin. It looks similar to a few of the date errors on coppercoins however it doesn't match anything completely. I was thinking it might be because of wear on other parts of the coin. Any Thoughts?
Keep searching Anarch! You are searching in a good spot. Unfortunately, I have found that certain dates in the 70s with pennies is tough compared to say pennies from the 50s or 60s because there seem to be less varieties. If all the coins are in good shape like the one you are showing, it helps eliminate some of the PMD that interferes with seeing and learning about errors/varieties. Keep looking and researching!
Thanks. It is quite discouraging that I keep thinking I found something that turns out to be nothing but Ill keep looking. I have tons of coins to go through. I've saved my pennies from change for the past 20 years and my dad was a coin collector who has a crate full of unopened rolls of coins I am going to slowly go through.
Anarchy....sounds like you are about to have FUN! I find it helpful to have varietyvista and doubledie open on my laptop while searching. We all do things differently but I can see that for part timers (like myself) and beginners, using just a phone is too tedious. You need to have multiple research methods open while looking. To me, the idea is all about "elimination" rather than "qualifications" when it comes to a coin. You mentioned something very very key up top....you said it "almost" matched a coin and that is smart on your part. You are doing it right. Try to find those that match perfectly. Be objective and honest with your eyes. I also have rolls of UC coins from 1972 , 75 and 76 from my Dad. They are in such great condition but not a single variety. enjoy some coffee and read this from Wexlers site. It will help with 70s pennies and all pennies for that matter. Its written in plain English and not to complex. You will like it and it will help you (and make this more fun) I promise. https://doubleddie.com/203843.html I cant wait to see your next coin anarchy!!! Good luck brother!!!!
Remeber that "almost" counts for nothing when you are looking for varieties. It either "is" or it "isn't".
Been at this 3 or 4 years or whatever off and on. I have to date found 3 legit doubled dies. 1 per year average in the wild with a few rolls bought. I find RPM and various chips and soforth but as far is real legitimate verifiable DDs...once a year on average for me. I may have had some I didnt identify and tossed back. The first year I was doing this I didnt find one RPM or DD. You are probably sharper and will look through more coins than me though so maybe you will find more then 1 a year. I know some other people here probably find 3-4 per year....or more. Point is dont get discouraged.
