I am fairly new to collecting, and I've just started buying rolls of coins, and placing them in 2x2 fold and staple holders. but i've been pretty dissappointed because all of my pennies have these small dark droplet marks on them, just to experiment, i took one coin, and rinsed some water on it, and rubbed it with a tissue, but no results. even if that had done anything i wouldn't have continued on the remaining stock, but could anyone please tell me what this material is on my coins? i could have alot of flawless coins if that stuff got out of here already. thanks

It sounds like what you are describing are carbon spots. What are the dates of these coins - and can you post a pic ?

you know, ever since i've posted this thread, i've tried to get a decent photo, but i can't do it, the flash blocks the coin, and if i turn it off, the shots too blurry from the slow shutter speed. it may be a very bad comparison, but it makes sense to me, have you ever drank diet coke, and you leave the cup til the soda droplets dry on the inside walls of the cup, and its like a dried dark droplet? thats exactly what they look like.

Yup - sounds like carbon spots. Nothing much you can do about them except replace the coins :(

Try taking a pic with no flash but sunlight.

Also a tripod helps immensly with slow shutter speeds. And if you have a delay timer, use it.

Digger- I Do Have a Tripod, in fact, i can't even believe i didn't think of that, I used to be way into cameras, but i never think about using the tricks anymore, a friend is using the camera today, so later on i will get a picture up. tomorrow the latest. GDJ- if i may ask the same question as zeke, what does cause these carbon spots? given thats my situation?

Carbon spots are caused by impurities in the metal - modern Lincoln cents are nortorious for them.
