I may be buying some coins on an online auction website. It appears that there are some proof coins in the one auction. The auctioneer states that they are proof which they are. I just want to know whether or not they are real. ( sorry for the poor picture quality) Thanks! ( walking liberty half dollar) (Three Cent Piece) Mercury Dime Washington Quarter
From this far away, I see no reason to doubt their authenticity, however consider the possibility that the holders may be PVC.
Authenticity ??? Can't really see the coins well enough to tell, but I would definitely question the grades, and check the type of plastic. If they are containing pvc, they need to be cracked out before they damage the coins.
Tempting, yes. For myself I would not. These all should have been slabbed by a leading TPG. Pics are too blurry and one cannot see any minor flaws that may exist. Plus what was said above.
I hate the holders. They hide too much and the plastic that under the plastic is not original packaging. The only way I would get involved with this stuff would be if I were given time to examine the coins in detail with a strong glass, and prices were at a DEEP discount.
tommyc03 has it right. Why aren't coins like that in a PCGS or NGC holder or at least ANACS? Those holders have the look of a home made job to me. Just my opinion. The decision is up to the buyer.
Either the original owner/submitter consistently bought PR65 coins or PR65 is the only grade that company issues. Steve
Judging by the rims, they appear to be proof. But don’t get lured in solely by low price. Go over to eBay and do some research. Every one of those is available in PCGS or NGC slabs.
All 1886 3-Cent nickels are proofs. They all look like proofs - you just can't tell if they are hairlined or damaged in any other way. Bid low. Very low.
Take your chances if you like on authenticity and quality. The WL half is about 600 if genuine and a clean grade. This coin should be slabbed as should the 3 cent nickel. Interesting that the holders appear to have been printed with a dot matrix printer. I don't think I've seen one of those since the late '80s. If so, that might mean that the coins have been sitting in a holder with PVC, prevalent at the time, for some decades and might have some damage. I would view this with suspicion, unless you're a gambler.
I bet the grading company used the old standards, where the only choices were Pr60 and Pr65. So be aware that the coins could grade a bit lower. I don’t like the quarter because of the ugly tarnish/haze, but the other coins seem to be nice. No cameo contract though.
Good call. I'm almost sure these coins have PVC issues. They may clean up just fine but that's a guess from the images. These look like auction holders from many years ago.
I decided not to take the gamble..... I reviewed shipping and it was kind of fishy, they said they would not ship unless you contacted them. That walker went for $220.00 USD and the three cent piece went for $200.00 USD. The merc went for 50 and so did the quarter.
