The Internet has been a far greater boon to Ignorance than it has to Knowledge. It used to be that knowledgeable people got published. Now, every crackpot can disseminate his bilge to other crackpots.

People like hearing that they are right. When they find an idiot spewing out nonsense that they agree with, that gives them vindication that their ignorant beliefs are correct.

This is why politics forums are so divisive.

The truth of reality is too difficult to accept or just not interesting enough to some so these ideas take shape.

The flat earthers are just a group of mainly social outcasts who have found common ground in the theory and therefore have developed friendships from it. It’s difficult for them to walk away or accept alternatives because they’ve found acceptance within this new group.

There’s a great documentary on Netflix that really details all of this. Definitely worth viewing.

When I teach a Human Anatomy class, I still occasionally get the question of why the male skeleton has 12 pairs of ribs (24) like the female, because they were told males have one less.

"I want to try to debunk this" - the following method was developed in the 1940s and was part of a reason for a nobel prize issued in 1960: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiocarbon_dating
basic examples are standard fare in present day university pre-calculus and calculus classes. obtaining the equipment and samples to debunk may be costly, but possible.
