Also sorry for the crappy pictures. Don't have much to work with. Can't even get my phone to crop and zoom in on the area.

Not a misaligned die strike.. What you are seeing is a ridge ring caused by a worn die.

I checked out a bunch of those errors in that reference site and learned a lot. There are soooooo many different kind of errors it's crazy.. I wish that site would say how rare each error is. But either way, that's probably the best reference site ever. Thanks for the link. A couple other people sent it to me but that's the 1st time I had a chance to really check it out

Yes, it's the same thing. Ridge ring caused by a deteriorated die.

When you consider the die maintenance and the die usage (hammer vs anvil) it helps to develop an overall explanation of what you’re seeing. At the start a sheet of paper can clean the faces of both dies when brought together. At later die states this is less the case especially around the edges of the dies. These wear away creating a ridge void that when introduced to a planchette, it leaves the reverse effect (a raised ridge) on the coin.

cold metal flow....like squeezing a tube of toothpaste? Is it because the zinc is so soft or because the copper is so thin ....or neither?
