I found a 2019 penny that has some unusual damage. I was wondering if anyone might have any ideas what might have happened to it?
For me it's love hate thing. Over all I hate them but I did get $35 for one that was EXTREMELY blistered.
Without any help from those of us that have some idle time, ie. the example in the OP, Mother Nature sure has fun with them as well.
The melting point of zinc is 420C/787F. You can do this on a gas stove using a pair of pliers. I wouldn't recommend doing it because the Zn melts quickly and can drip on you stove top (Don't ask me how I know this. I was young and stupid. Now I'm not young anymore ) Any high heat source like a torch will do it as well.
Definitely torch. Look at the UN in United....thats where the person was holding the coin with a metal tool like pliers. The metal tool dissipates the heat where it touches the coin so that little part looks unaffected. Held it, torched it a few seconds and as soon as it started breaking down stopped. A few more seconds and it was totally toast. LOL...Ive done torched a zincoln before with a $5 pencil torch from harbor freight. Find that in Tampa Jug lol!!???
some random 'new member' usually asks: 'what type of rare error is this, and how much is it worth? - I saw a video on YouTube...'
