    Howdy good people,

I've recently bought my first slabbed coins and would like your opinion on a couple of things.

Some of these slabs are part of existing collections that I have in albums. I have no intention of selling them. For example, I just picked up a buffalo 1921-S in VF-30 completing my set (except for the 3 leg). I also have a 14-D in XF and a 13-SII in MS64 that are in slabs. My thought is to simply break them out and stick them in my album. As mentioned, I have no intention of selling them.

This is in contrast to some other coins that I've bought recently in slabs that I might someday sell (i.e. some CC Morgans and gold).

Also, what's the best and safest way to crack a slab?

    thanks,

    rono

    Hey Rono, :hail:

I personally would never crack a slab unless I was planning on resubmitting the coin to another TPG and don't want them to know the grade given by the original TPG. I believe it's pretty much a known fact that slabbed coins, if slabbed by one of the top TPG's, will bring a higher price when you go to sell the coin so if you ever run into financial problems, your coin collection becomes a lifesaver and if you broke it out of the slab, you'll get less for it even if you keep the slab as evidence.

None of us ever want to sell a single coin in our possession but due to many possible reasons, we all do eventually and probably the number one reason is upgrading (higher grade coin or different coinage altogether). So crack the slab if you must but I never will.

    Ribbit :)

break those puppies out! a pair of pliers and a good twist is usually enough to break the seal. The few times I did it, I "tapped" the edge with a hammer until it cracked.

Man I got burned so bad for making a similar comment like the one above, but I agree with you 100%. I have many thousands of dollars tied up in coins, and I never want to have to get rid of them...... but one never knows what the winds of time will bring.

A Dremel works really well. I wouldn't worry about cracking it out. If nothing else, if a time comes when you have to sell, there'll always be a dozen or more TPG's ready to take your money for you in exchange for an opinion.

Personally I would not crack them out. But this is your choice - and for something like the 3-legged buffalo you could always get it re-graded. So if you want to fill the album - go for it.

Just call "BeNT Grading Service", PM Bonedigger, the President and CFO, he has many handy hammers available.
In fact, he enjoys it so much, he may not even charge you!
