This is not a government minted coin correct?? Been having a discussion with someone who says different.. Figured I would get the right response here.. Thanks
It is a silver round manufactured by Sunshine Minting. Not minted by the U.S. Government. It is a bullion round sold for it's silver content.
Thank you very much...I love when I'm right...lol. I appreciate that.. Did not know where it was minted..
just because it is round, and has a symbol similar to something the US MINT has produced, does not make it a US MINT product. just peruse all these copper rounds that have similar design themes of various US Mint coins ... https://www.apmex.com/category/60010/copper-rounds peruse all these silver rounds ... https://www.apmex.com/category/25020/silver-rounds Yes, if you have the cash even Gold rounds ... https://www.apmex.com/product/31967/1-10-oz-gold-round-secondary-market and there are many companies out there called "Mints" because they manufacture "mint" round things. As long as it doesn't state a monetary figure on it you know it's not actually money. You may want to remove "someone" from your knowledge base to ask questions to about rounds/coinage ...
The design of that silver round is based on the "Buffalo" nickel -- a government-minted U.S. coin (1913 - 1938). But that does NOT necessarily mean any coin/token/round based on that design is government minted. In fact, there are plenty of privately-minted silver rounds based on U.S. coin designs, like these: https://www.apmex.com/category/25155/u-s-coin-replica-silver-rounds
This reminds me of a TV ad I just saw today. A $2 "coin" (as it is stated on tv) that is the "first silver american double eagle" (I should add .. NOT made by the US MINT) with a $2 dollar value. Of course they also briefly mention that it is minted in the "COOK Islands" and is HALF an ounce of silver. All for $19.95 which is MORE than a ONE Ounce American Silver eagle which is made by the US Mint. So buyer beware .... below images from ncmint.com so comparison US Silver Eagle ... 1 oz ... $20ish or so fake silver thing below ... 1/2 oz .. $20ish .. and it's only worth MELT or less after you buy it which is less than $9.
To be fair, the coin does depict American bald eagles, and there's two of them, and the coin does have silver in it. So technically it is indeed a "silver American double eagle." (Maybe it should be "silver double American eagle." Word order does change the meaning a bit lol.) It's not fake; it is a real coin, and does indeed have silver in it. But yeah, the premium over silver value means it's overpriced. If it had a full ounce that's a great deal, but with only 1/2 an ounce nope.
