Wow!! That really takes a lot of dedication!! And of course a lot of nickels. Congrats. Nice line up!
I think that our nickel collector embodies the quintessential individual who is collecting for the love of the sport (hunting and searching). Bravo! We need more like him!
Whopper - thanks. It is funny, I actually have 3 coin collections, the one I had as a kid, the coins I’ve purchased as an adult and the coins i’ve pulled from circulation. In terms of market value the purchased collection is worth several hundred times what the found in circulation collection is. But I tell you what i’d Part with the bought coins and not think twice about it, but I’d never sell the found coins. I’ve found some cool stuff - 2 gold coins, a bust half, a Kennedy with a retained struck through staple (NGC MS64), several classic commemorative halves, barber coins, a nickel 3 cent piece, several neat errors and varieties. you find all kinds of good stuff. The treasure hunt aspect is basic and real.
Well done Joe. The ‘43D was the last nickel for my first circulation set. I’ve found a couple more since. It was a ender to boot!
I used to feel pretty strongly about this with regards the Jefferson series. Admittedly building other sets from circulation finds is likely impossible. Folks will have to buy coins at some point. But a purists set of Jefferson Nickels is a fine endeavor and in the end almost every coin will be VF or better.
So i’ve Completed the Jefferson set, ‘38-‘61 minus the proofs. I’ve also completed Kennedy halves ‘64-‘91 including all the proofs, silvers and clad. I believe i’ll Complete the Roosevelt set ‘46-‘64, excluding the proofs. I also likely will complete the Eisenhower series including the ‘73 and all blue and brown IKE’s. The only achievable set I don’t anticipate finishing are the Franklins. I just don’t hunt the volume necessary to complete.
I bought an old Whitman Jefferson nickel book filled - it only went up to 1949-D with the third page filled out by the original owner until 1958-D. I transferred it all to a new Whitman that goes to 1961. So only a few more to go to finish it. Most of the coins in it don't look as nice as yours.
Nice! I’ll bet those more modern series are AU and above. I’m a little surprised at the Roosevelt series with all the silver hoarders out there. But as I understand it there aren’t any really key dates amongst them so in that way it makes perfect sense. A volume thing really. Building a Franklin set would be awesome. What a challenge though. With the new year coming up quickly I suppose I’ll need to create a 2020 challenge for myself. Perhaps it’s to complete my circulation Buffalo set. I’m only 16 nickels shy at this point. But I haven’t CRHed in over 3 years. Perhaps I should have kept at it!
If you count nic-a-date buffalo's I actually think that a circulation found set of Buffalo's is actually doable, but obviously you'd need crazy volume.
I am. I was surprised that I found 1913 D (both types) and a few more smaller mintage specimens. The 16 includes some more common dates/mms but just haven’t popped up. I’ve been meaning to figure on an estimate of the volume I’ve searched. Significant but not like a few here.
I’ve posted my pickled nickel set a month or so ago. I think it’s doable with volume and pickling. I’m interested if DDNG will accomplish the task in his 500 box challenge.
Perty. Good job. I comened you. Alls i need is a 44S to complete my grandbabies collections. Hear about it often
I hear ya. I give amost all of my roll hunting coins away. Bur i have my one and only slabbed coin. Also my only Morgan dollar that will never leave my grasp. @cpm9ball. @Dave Waterstraat. There going to heaven with me. I love coins. Love cointalk members more. Your quest to find a complete set of found nickles is a task few can accomplish. Be proud of yourself as much as we are of you
