Hello CoinTalk! I have a 8 reales contemporary counterfeit stamped "MANILLA Ca.Nl.Ma." and "FALSA" on the obverse. Any idea what a reasonable asking price would be? Thanks!
If the piece is silver I would suspect it would be worth bullion value unless a contemporary counterfeit collector has interest in the piece.
Spot price of silver, otherwise whatever a collect of sorts is willing to pay. I doubt you could recover ebay fees.
Thank you for the replies. Yes, one "L" in Manila. I am reasonably sure that it was detected as a fake in Manila and the initials are the assayer's mark. What I think it neat about the coin is that it *should* have been destroyed, but wasn't. I was hoping to find a collector or a museum who likes these types of things. I would rather keep it than melt it down for the silver. At the very least, it looks good on a shelf.
There is a dedicated community of collectors that collect/study contemporary counterfeits. If it's a true contemporary counterfeit and the counterstamps are authentic, I think there would be some intertest
Those are the type of folks I would like to get in touch with. If it's *real*, I would like it to find a home with someone who can appreciate it. How would I go about confirming the authenticity of the stamps?
