These second set of pictures show the coin as having more detail than the first set. Yeah, based on these more recent pictures, the coin does appear to have AU details. Maybe this coin was struck with a die that was very worn or rusted along the outer edge?
Much Better Picture!! I was way too hard on the coin in the other pics. It's does look like an MS coin. The top parts of the letters L and I in Liberty and U and N are usually weekly struck in the small six variety. Thanks for the better look........It's a really nice coin even though I really don't get much into these type of coins.
Based on those new pics I'd say the coin has been lightly corroded and cleaned. The surface is way too rough.
Yep, I also believe that it has had an old cleaning and has re-toned with time! Also, someone apparently cleaned the area within and around the Date more recently. Although I believe that it is an EF-45, PCGS and NGC would bodybag it, would get that damned "Cleaned" note on the holder with anyone reliable TPG and since it is the common "Plain 6, Stemless" Variety (Cohen 1), I doubt that it would really warrant the extra cost of slabbing! Sorry! Frank
I actually was suspicious of the same thing, mostly the light corrosion, and figured that if it was corroded and/or cleaned, I'd return it. When I got the coin, I examined it. No corrosion, perfectly smooth surfaces. It didn't seem to have altered surfaces, either. Looks natural. The surface does have a granular look to it in the picture, though. I'm no expert at detecting cleaning, but the remaining luster looked fairly natural.
I'm just confused, if I can't see anything with the naked eye, does that mean there is no corrosion? There are some blemishes near 'liberty' but they dont look like theyre granular.
Look at the area I have marked, see all the little bumps and pits - that is the result of light corrosion.
Oh yeah, I definitely noted that when I received the coin, but it didn't look that way at all in person even under scrutiny. I was actually pretty surprised about that.
