Well clembo, I happen to have a 23 in similar condition, including the date wear. I would like to believe that mine would grade VF.

A coin dealer I know had a raw 23 with more wear then ours, tagged VF, something, and he tried to tell me mine were not quite Fine. Out of respect I didn't call him on his coin. Go figure that one though. There seems to be lots of these "high date" SLQs about the same F-VF condition. Yet much better price at VF then F.

I just a soon trade all my F and VF SLQs for a BU example. Great work of art. I wish we could bring this type art back to our current currency.

Need to get some photo grades for these years, old buffs too.

    I would say around F, maybe F-15.

Beautiful coin but horrible design you know? This one has a lot of detail but the date just plain sucks. My 21 has less detail but a 4 digit (although mushy date).

Gonna keep it for now. Paid a whopping $3 for it.

Mine is just about the spitting image of yours. I guess that I should hang onto it.

Now to find a nice 1921 or 1923S around this condition....

I think it's 10-12. But I don't collect this series. They are hard to grade IMO because some have no date with less wear and some have a solid date with more wear.

The reason you see this wear versus date conflict is because 1917-24 production years produced what is call the "pedestal date" which had the date so high on the coin that it worn down quickly. The 1925-30 coins are known as "recessed dates" and allow the date to wear much slower then the other devices.

I know what you mean, I paid melt for mine years ago, but I only have the last digit.

While it does display some VG/F details, I can only give it a grade of G-4 because the rim is incomplete and the date is not full (I am using the ANA Grading book). Oh well, I guess you can't complain for $3.

I'm with those that said you got what you paid for. Melt value is $3. You did good on this one. In fact about $3.25 or so now. As for grading, with all that wear the best I could do is a G4.
