There have been a few threads about older Chinese coins so I thought I would share some of the ones I own. I have had fits trying to post pics by with "clembo's" guidance I may have figured ot out: http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii280/wheats101
What aren't you sure of? Kinda of a vague comment there (and a bit irresponsible too) but if you are referring to authenticity, not to worry- I have been at this a long time & have culled through a lot of bad ones. I trust my knowledge and the knowledge of my supplier.
I tend to agree...How one could even formulate an opinion regarding the authenticity of those coins based on those two pictures is beyond me...The coins are cast thus, I would think, it would take a bit more than a picture of this quality (of coins piled into a case) to judge. I would like to hear why he is 'not sure' about them as well
I think lots of people are just normally put off by anything that comes out of china, as well as the fact that most old Chinese coins are cast rather than struck with a hammer of some sort and a little harder to authenticate. I personally love old Chinese coins and try to get my hands on as many as possible, but then again I have a slight bias towards Asian coins and currency for no real reason, I just like them. Lots of coin collecting people in western cultures have a bais against chinese coins because of the amount of counterfeit cr*p that comes out of there, which makes it very hard to trust anythng out of china. There is also the language issue. The fact that Roman and later coinage of Europe and the west mainly consists of the Latin alphabet, makes it much more relatable to most western collectors so many do not bother with the amount of work needed to decipher asian or chinese coins.
Ok, just want to clarify- sorry for the irresponsibility, but I didn't want to be too honest-to me, those coins look slightly wrong (colour is too uniform) , and I wouldn't bet that they were real. Where were they acquired anyway ? How much did you pay for them ?
An update on this topic. I have recently purchased several Chinese cash coins from David Wheatley, of varying dynasties. They were all authentic as far as I can tell, and of high quality. List some more David!
Yup, they're round with square holes in the middle, and a couple of them have Chinese characters on them. What are you seeing in those pictures to either distinguish Ming from Qing, or any of the other dynasties of the last millenium-plus; or Chinese from Japanese, Korean and Annamese? The only thing I can be certain of from those pictures is that the long slender coins do not match the shape of any Japanese knife money pictured in the JNDA catalog.
