Well, this hasn't been one of my better weeks.....

I make a bunch of bad purchases because I got bored with the franks....
Then today I rolled my ankle....so I will now be resting for the weekend:mad:.

So, Everyones advice finally got through my thick skull....I am going on a break...

I am going to read up on coins for a while....and then pick a set, and read up on those. I am no longer going to buy any coins unless I know what I am doing...

So, I decided to stick with ancients (would die without those) and find a U.S. set that I like.

I will still buy LRB's, in order to help with my attribution and cleaning of them. I bought one Tanka just to help me grade and attribute them....then I need to do research on those...So I will probly have one more set, and it will be a U.S. set...

I am going to start tommorrow by reading the whole redbook all the way throgh again...and figure out a set i want to collect. and Buy a book or two on those.

I am going to try to not be all over the place...and actually listen to you guys the first time around.

I am sure I will still make mistakes down the road.....but they way I acted this week was very dumb....I bought coins just because I had the money without even thinking...

But, the week did get a little better today....Arditarion unexpectidly mailed me four ancient romans....These are definatly going to help me with attribution....HUGE SHOUT OUT TO HIM:hail:

Lastly, I want to thank everyone here for there advice, and I am very sorry I didn't listen to you guys sooner. If I would have, I could have saved a lot of money.

So, in summary......It is time for me to restart...I am going back to the newbie stage...since I obviously need to get more experience on the simple things like toning and grading.

I'm sorry you had such a bad week dude :(

If I could give some advice I'd say head out to a couple of coin shops but leave your wallet, plastic, checkbook etc at home. Just browse and see what grabs you. Don't get disheartened, this is a really great hobby, just try to discriminate a little more, ask as many questions as you need to and do that BEFORE you spend your precious dollars. Don't leave the board, stick around, take advantage of the advice and focus. You'll be doing fine in a few months once you cut back to one area or maybe two.

Hope the ankle gets better soon.

That sounds like a plan, Anthony. I hope you can stick with it this time.

There are several of us here that have tried our best to help you but, personally, helping you with coins has been like trying to herd cats. We give you advice on one specific area that you are interested in and all of a sudden you charge off full speed ahead in some entirely different and totally unforeseen direction.

I think you will find much greater satisfaction in this hobby if you try to settle on one or two areas to collect instead of buying every coin that catches your eye. Try not to let your money burn a hole in your pocket. Pick an area or two to pursue and try not to lose interest in only a few days. You will have better luck if you plan your actions carefully rather than making a snap decision to collect something that you find later (maybe only a day or two later) that you really are not interested in.

    Stop.

    Look.

    Listen.

    Hey, I think he's getting it !! ( Hobo that is )

Stainless...The main thing is, if your getting too frustrated to have fun, then yep a break will be perfect. Been there many times.

Hey stainless, chill. There's a soap opera called "The young and restless".
I tune in to Coin Talk daily to read the latest saga!
Here's my feedback. Take it or leave it.
I don't know why you got bored with the Franklins. You were doing well with it. You obtained some and you sold some. This is how a car dealer or realtor operates. Right on track buddy. So why jump ship?
Just a FYI- It took me two years+ to put together a complete set of Franklins. Two years plus. And I started with 3 coins I inherited free.
Upgraded, sold some. Upgraded again, sold some. Still had empty holes in the new Dansco. It doesn't happen overnight. It ain't cheap.
Even now there are some that I'm not thrilled about and will maybe someday upgrade again. So anyway, I say keep at it. But expect to be stalled. Expect roadblocks. Delays. Why throw away the knowledge you have gained with the series? Franklins are tough to find in BU and/or FBL.
You are familiar somewhat now with the Franklin half. Keep looking at them.
In the end the satisfaction will be rewarding. Not saying to run out and buy any. Be picky, discriminating. =end of pep talk=

Breaks - never hurt, take your time and learn. I have not seen anything earth shattering wrong that you have done. Yes - you have jumped around a little bit, but all of us do at times. So enjoy the hobby and have patience.

I confess, when I was an ankle biter I read the redbook and new it a lot more thoroughly than some people know their bibles. I still read it over dinner occasionally, I admit - a bad habit I picked up as a kid was reading at the table, I can sit there and read a book, eat, and have a conversation at the same time.

    Hope you get feeling better!
Might I suggest a book or two that you will need for any US set you decide to collect! Photograde and The ANA Grading Guide.
Both of these can be had for around $10 each I believe.

Learning to grade is something that takes years to complete---grading is an Art, and to get good at it you will need to read as much as you can about it and look at thousands and thousands of coins. I'm still very much green when it comes to grading...but I've been collecting for around 8 years I guess.

    Have fun!

If nothing else, don't look back on the past week as a bad one, but as an educational one. Besides, a week that results in some new coins can't be all that bad.

Thanks for all the help and support guys:)

    Victor-
I don't think I will ever actually stop collecting frankies....if I find one I like, I will buy it....it is actually the coin I am most knowledgable in right now. Just now, I will have 2 or 3 other fields and wont get bored so quick.

I have actually order photograde, it was shipped this week and Im still waiting for it to come in.

    thanks again guys,

    Anthony

Anthony - You already got my PM of my thoughts. We are here to support you and give you any help you need. And remember what I said? If you give up collecting, I will drive up to MI, pick up spock on the way, and whoop your butt. You were meant to collect coins, just gotta learn the ropes first. Man, if I had a nickel for everytime I screwed up..... I would be rich... then I could buy more coins! :p:D Joe
