Some HONKING Big Pictures. But, I knda like the coin. As far as the toning goes, I think it's safe to say "a little of both." Ben
I'm no expert at detecting AT versus NT, so I won't say that it's one or the other. If I were looking to buy this coin, I'd say the obverse looks nice. But, the reverse is distracting to me. Why does the toning follow the rim all the way around except for between 2-5 o'clock, where it suddenly makes for a straight shot accross the coin? Looks weird. Toning is an aspect of a coin that is either liked or disliked, not as a group, but individually. I may find the reverse a mess while you like it, just as you may dislike some toning on coins I like. In that sense, whether or not it is AT of NT is irrelevent and shouldn't be a deciding factor in whether you like the piece enough to buy it or not. I'm sure many will disagree with that statement, but I'm into collecting for the enjoyment, and personal likes and dislikes are key in my collection building. Now, hopefully someone with the knowhow can shed some light on whether it's AT or NT, just for curiosity sake. Guy~
I agree with Ben. To me part of it looks AT and NT. The reverse darker areas look like it was resting against something that caused the toning - to me NT. The obverse purple like areas look like it was caused by dipping or something. Overall these pictures make the coin look better. I like it also.
hi stainless! you did not get hurt on the coin and it is a great learning experience w/ little $ invested. you can tell why they would try to darken it as it would hide some of the wear and bagmarks visible on both the obverse and reverse. it is worn but w/ darkening they can try the weak strike morgan effect for pricing. this coin cannot in any way be construed as "rainbow". do a search at some of the auction houses (and other resources) and compare. look at the denticles and lack of toning in most of those areas and compare w/ the highly darkened area (other than the odd untoned high hair area on obverse as well). notice trhe odd non -coin shaped toning on reverse as well. in my very humble AND UNEXPERT OPINION....i believe the coin has been placed in a material which will oxidize it quickly, rather than old time album toning...(hence, lack of toning in denticles...most album toning began on the rim area and reverse). this is only my very humble opinion and would like for the experts to speak out w/ details. it was worth the $25 in knowledge when used correctly!!!!! stick w/ the hobby and ENJOY it. May GOD Bless you and your family. sincerely, steve
i like the coin AT or not i think its beautiful Ben can i send you my morgans to tone i would like mine blue and green
There may be a bit of NT present but the brighter colors are AT. Notice how it looks painted on. The toning goes across the fields and jumps right up onto and across the devices and lettering. NT typically does not do this. This may be a good coin to have to help you identify AT in the future.
yes....i agree and my apologies as well( i should have said this earlier!!!!!)...it is a pretty coin !!!! regardless of the subject matter of at vs nt and thank you so much for sharing it with us....sincerely....steve
I'm not that good with toning...However I have read that natural toning in most cases starts from the edges of the coin and works in. Heres a good website to start with http://rg.ancients.info/guide/toning.html Harry
I have a few nice blue Morgans for you to take a look at... I'll post them over the next day or two in a seperate thread. Sorry, no green ones though! lol
I think it's a sweet coin, AT or NT. :thumb: (I'm leaning towards AT though, but like I said... :thumb) Phoenix
