Picked up my box of halves today. A third of the way through I saw silver! Turns out it was a 1954 Franklin. First 90% in a while. Also found a 1982S and 7 NIFC's. 20191115_184256.jpg 20191115_184313.jpg 20191115_193608.jpg

Great thread.....glad I saw this! I plan on reading every page by the end of the weekend. Thank God the wifey is out of town. Anyway, as I recently posted in another section of CT, I have been going through 12 boxes of cents per week for many years. I save all of the copper. I also put uncirculated '59-'82 in separate boxes and uncirculated '83-'89 in their own boxes. I also put Canadians and nicely toned pennies aside. I do not hoard cents for investment purposes, but rather solely for the love of the rascals. It's especially neat to look over my toned rolls every 5 years or so. The really sweet ones started drying up in circulation about 3 years ago. I pickup my 12 boxes every Monday from my main bank branch and maintain a lesser account at a credit union, where I discard my junk. My question is this; I am ignorant when it comes to error coins. One of these years I plan on devoting a bunch of time to going thru my many boxes of unc '59-'82 and '83-'89 cents for any possible diamonds in the rough. Besides conducting my due diligence in regards to reading up on error coins, are there any other suggestions to aid in my hunt? Thanks!

I am doing the same thing. Except i am reading up on specific errors and looking through the rolls. Very fun.

Each date has rolls. 1970 has 8 rolls. I pulled the san frans and looked for that error.

Last night, i sorted 1982, Denver, 2.55 grams zinc, for a dd error.

Yeah, you're one big step ahead of me, being able to recognize the errors, Andy. Other than the esteemed '55 prominent miscue, I wouldn't know an error cent if it bit me on my hand. What never ceases to amaze me is that by just opening a roll or two from a penny box, pretty much tells you what you're in store for, for the entire box. There must be one heck of a lot of people dumping their large piggy bank contents at the banks. Somewhere out there is huge batch of uncirculated pre-'34 Lincolns and Indian Heads, just sitting in some old farmhouse bedroom for the last 90 years, that are destined to be unknowingly exchanged at face value. Don't we all entertain such wild dreams? As a young man I had a huge poster of Cheryl Tiegs staring over at me from my closed bedroom door.......now it's a huge pic of an MS66 14-D. Oh to be young again.

Ha ha! Yeah, I don't think I'm quite going to make it, as I'm only about a quarter (1/4 th) of the way through it and I still have 3 boxes of pennies just begging to be uncorked on Sunday, HalvesSearcher. This is a fun read though. I've never contemplated searching anything other than pennies, but this thread has definitely opened my eyes to the distinct possibility of trying my luck with a batch of halves. Maybe it's like gambling where you get really lucky right out of the starting blocks, so you're quickly hooked and hence cooked?

Are dollar coins worth hunting? I don't mean Ikes, I mean the slightly-larger-than-a-quarter sized dollar coins. Anything particularly valuable that I can potentially find? I know about the cheerios dollars, and I know about the NIFCs and proofs. Should I try buying rolls? Or should I go vending machine hunting? (My local transit agency has fare vending machines that spits out the dollar coins for change)

A Red Book is a good place to start. One coin in particular you can find is a 1979-P Susan B. Anthony wide rim / near date. I got on a kick about a year ago and started putting together Dansco P&D albums for SBA, Sacajawea / Native American, and Presidential Dollars from CRH. Only lack one or two SBA and Sacs, and have a complete set of Presidentials (thanks to @Cheech9712 who gave me a Denver Nixon to complete my album!). I still hope I will find a Wounded Eagle Sacajawea, but they seem to be rare as rocking horse manure, lol.

Got ten rolls of quarters from the bank. Teller gave me ten rolls that someone had gone through and put their initial on the outside of each roll. Well did not find any silver or 2019 W's. But I did find a 2000 S quarter. You just never know what some people might miss! :) Still looking for that first 2019 W. It is getting closer. 20191117_120531.jpg 20191117_120547.jpg

Finished a box of cents while waiting for the laundry to finish. Pulled out this 1972P DDO-003. I'm happy with it :)

I was caring 4 boxes of pennies to my car in the parking lot at my local bank and there is a narrow rail that leads from the banks entrance to the parking lot and a kid maby 5 years old knocked into me and I droped all four boxes one on my foot and the other 3 down the pavement and they all burst open and took me a bit to clean em up. Kids mom also cussed me out for being a danger to her child. Found a 1972 S proof, a 2008 proof, a ms 60 wheat cent though in the undamaged rolls 6 Canadians, and 49 wheats out of the 4 boxes total.
