FFIVN and I went to the Baltimore Whitman show today and we had a pretty good time. We saw @armysgti working the check in desk at the front and then we met up with @Seattlite86 which was cool. He gave FFIVN a pretty cool Talon Head Ike that now has a home in his budding error collection! We also picked through Harlan J. Berk's Junk pile and pulled out some interesting (to us) coins. Time for some identification! Next, we hit up a few world coin bins and got a few cool older coppers and cash coins. (sorry, no pictures!) Our last stop was a dealer who had some US type coins that we wanted to add to our 7070. We got a silver proof bicentennial set and 2 Seated Liberty half dollars. Now, I'm sure you are wondering how we got all this sweet stuff for only $3.50? Well the last guy we visited ended wanting to buy some of our West Point quarters so we happily obliged. We even came home with a few extra dollars All-in-all it was a great time at the coin show!
You guys should take pictures together and post them here! That's what I have done when I meet members at shows.
The Olbia dolphins are very common with many hardly recognizable as what they were. Yours is probably above average. We like to see clear heads and dorsal fins but tails are rare. They are priced pretty much according to how much imagination it takes to see a dolphin. I sent you a 'Conversation' regarding the Shahi jital. You might search the ancients section for more on these. The other ancients are identifiable with a little work (some more obvious than others). The second is a Greek language provincial and easy to read on the obverse as long as you read Greek letters. Have fun chasing down the ID's. That is a lot of fun.
We paid about $12 per coin so I am pretty happy with that. My Greek is not up to snuff so it will be a bit more challenging. FFIVN and I have been having a good time looking through all the resources and trying our best to identify them. If anything, the money spent was totally worth the time spent with my son.
Thanks for the show recap! Third coin is from Tabaristan under the Abbasid governors. Fourth coin is a Byzantine follis. As for the emperor? Well, some people call him a space cowboy, some call him the gangster of love, some people call him Maurice Tiberius...
If that’s the stuff in his junk bin, I wonder what he considers normal! I remember seeing he had a Constantine XI for sale once. Seeing stuff like this makes me realize that one of these days I’ll have to go to these really big shows.
You should go! I really wish I could meet up with more people here to chat and go grab a beer with! This show is an awesome show to attend. it has a lot of things for the seasoned collector and dealer to your regular joe looking to fill their cent album!
He gave me a catalog for his 209th Buy or Bid Sale. I told him that unfortunately everything in there was out of our price range but he told me to keep the catalogue and enjoy the pictures. There are tons of great color pictures of all types of ancients, some medals, and some artifacts. It is definitely a keeper
Furryfrog2 , it was great seeing you and your Son .. The show did pretty good this year and we apprecaite you taking time to come up and look around. Appears you did really well ... Did you get the New $ 1.00 S ASE RP Enhanced ?? Tracy
I did. Managed to get it from the mint website the day it went on sale. It's a purdy coin and a good addition to my baby son's collection
