Help on these DDR nickels please.

Well before I add these to the main nickel hunt thread it always helps to get another opinion on these coins. The first is 1981D-DDR and second is a 1962 Philadelphia DDR. The third is a 83D with some interesting fat lettering on the obverse as I call it.

The 81D and 62 Philadelphia I have compared to variety vista and I believe these come very close to the photos. I wanted to finish three boxes tonight but have spent a hour alone on these three nickles.

First Four photos are of the 81D the "E P" in E Pluribus look awful close to the variety vista photos.

The next four are the 62 Philadelphia notice the split on top of the letter "TES" in States and "RIB" come very close to variety vista.

Last two are of the 83D fat lettering. The mint mark is spread pretty well. Nothing amazing just a odd ball.

I would appreciate feedback on these. Just want to make sure before adding it as a find.

I see more die deteration and Md than doubled dies.

 

+1 for die deterioration (fat letters) and Machine Doubling. Mintmarks should not show doubling as they are added after the die is made and before it is heat-treated.

 

I do agree I see machine doubling but this is what I was focusing on on the two coins. The first photo is the 1981D and the second is the 62 Philadelphia. My photo is on top and the variety vista is on bottom. Still hard for my old eyes to tell.

 

I think the 81D I will throw back but the 62 "RIB" looks pretty close?

 

Which DDO are you comparing to on the "62"?

The 1981 I think was just fooling me. The 1983 was just something I wanted to show as a odd ball. But this 62 is pretty darn close

 

I agree that it is pretty close. Your coin shows to be struck with a later die stage than the comparison coin that is listed looking at the web between the I & B.
I think you will have a hard time coming to an positive identification.
But I bet you learned something . I did, Thank you. I do not deal with nickels much.

Re: your '62 appears to have some doubling...obscured a bit by the later die state (as someone pointed out). I think you'll need to verify markers to assign this one as a result. You may want to try and crossreference with Brian's photos and match the obverse marker (between date and rim).
