So I found this 1989 D Lincoln cent. It looks a little funny to me. (the mintmark). So i thought i would post some pics of different angles and see what you guys think. To me it looks like its not even supposed to be there. It's hard to tell but the D is nowhere near as tall as the date die. and the D has very thin lines. Do I sound desperate? or could it be an error?

Probably due a partially clogged die.

Yeah i agree. I'm pretty sure they stamp the mintmark on separately from the rest of the design.

Partly clogged... maybe, that's an awfully evenly filled clog though. More likely it is just a lightly punched mintmark.

Speaking of pennies and errors, I have a thread on the Auctions forum for bullion overstruck copper pennies. In the process I have inadvertantly created several brockages, doubles, and severe off-centers. I am including one with every purchase of the overstrikes.

Since I started making coins I now hate errors... they are all too common. I have a coffee can full of them now... awful things. Different point of view I guess.

wow..thanks everyone...again im still learning about how dies are made so I'll def. do more research on clogged dies to understand the reasoning better!:D

It's easy enough to understand, dies can pick up dirt, debris, and/or grease while in use and that stuff can clog part or sometimes even most of the die. Then when the die strikes a planchet the clogged part does not strike up because the grease stops metal from flowing into that portion of the die.
