Please guess the grade of the 1930 Buffalo Nickel shown below by voting in the attached poll. I have added the option of choosing a "+ grade" at the end of the poll. If you think the coin deserves a +, choose both the numerical grade and the
    "+ grade" option.

Please make your grade determination and cast your vote before scrolling down to read the responses to the thread.

I guessed 65+...there are some ticks throughout, but the design mainly covers them up (not as prominent as it would be on some coins); there is also a spot on the reverse (a bit below the 3 o’clock position) that is a bit distracting but not really in a focal area.

I added the plus on a whim-I’m now doubting the coin got one

I'm lousy with nickels, Paul, but it sure is pretty.

MS64, well struck example with chatter marks above the braid and front leg.

The carbon spot nixes it for me. 64 max.

65 carbon spot not enough to go lower.

If @physics-fan3.14 grading GTG experiment has taught us anything, it is that Cointalk members are on the conservative side of grading. Only 2 respondents to this poll thought this Buffalo was an MS63, but according to NGC, that was still too high.

When I submitted this coin, I had it at lock MS64 with maybe an outside chance for a + grade or MS65. If I thought this coin was an MS62, I wouldn't even have submitted it. Usually when I see a grade like this, I look for a reason for them to net grade the coin, but I don't even see that here. This grade has be utterly confused.

I interpreted most of the marks to residual planchet roughness not struck out (weak strike), so I said 65. The luster is 64 luster though.

Usually when such coins grade 62/63 or so, I look for random hairlines (not cleaning hairlines!) that show up under a good light. Nearly 100% of the time there are hairlines

I did that, I didn't see anything that would cause a net grade. I will look again.

62? Nope, don't agree with that one.

Wow, I guessed 64 as well. The luster looks quite dull, which is going to hurt the coin. There appears like there might be a haze and a couple of spots, but that shouldn't bring the grade down that much. There are quite a few marks, but it's hard to say how many of those are planchet roughness and how many are actual marks. The strike isn't anything impressive, but it is far better than a lot of other buffalos.

I could see an argument made for 63. I would never have guessed 65 for this coin, that is too high in my opinion.

But 62? Unless there is something I'm not seeing in the pictures (which is quite possible, to be fair), I don't see a 62 grade on that one.

I agree with everything you wrote here. I voted MS65 because I had a hunch maybe the luster wasn't coming through properly on the photo. Otherwise, I would have said MS64. You got robbed at MS62, IMO.

The grader must have been in a hurry to go home, or not feeling well the day they graded that coin. I'm still at MS64. I'd really be tempted to send it PCGS and see if it gets upgraded.
