Jim, have you tried any of the newer 50g x 0.001g scales? I haven't, mine is a 30g x 0.001g, but I'd love to have an accurate/repeatable mg scale that can reach past a troy ounce...

I saw one today when I was getting the Amazon site, but no. I do still have my Mettler H30 that I rebuilt when the lab was going digital and wanted to dump it. Maybe I will try one on a specific gravity mechanism I am working on. Jim

Thanks for the link. This one looks ideal! Although JeffB makes a point for troy ounce coins.

I have a milligram scale, and I had high hopes for doing various studies with it, but it's actually mostly been collecting dust. My day-to-day scale has .01g resolution, and that's plenty for authentication -- normal tolerance for all the issues I'm interested in is greater than that, even for gold, I think.

In a word...NO. Not all nickels weigh exactly 5.0. There is a tolerance and wear can make a difference. The 5.0 is a "quick 'n dirty" check.

In the same vein, a dollar bill weighs 1.0 g

About the 50g x .001g scales, I tried a sub-$20 one from Amazon (several brands there all look like the same scale). It seems identical to my .01g scale, except for the random number generator that adds the extra digit...
