    Captkirk....

I read your reply a few days ago and was at the moment unsure of how to answer it. After thinking about it for a while I think I have a way to respond to what you said.

There was a time in my life when $5 was like $500, I have been working all my life to get where I am presently and the road has been a hard one with no one ever giving me anything. No family $$$ from life Insurance or any inheritance whatsoever. I work hard and smart...that is something life teaches you as you age!
There are years ahead of you that will prove to be strong financial years and years that will not. I am thankful to God for my drive and strong back, may his blessing touch each of you!
In this life we all need to set goals for ourselves and as I age and my young son of 6 yrs grows before my very eyes, I feel compelled to leave him better off than I was and only hope he has not to work so hard. One day he will be alone in this world as he is my only child and he will need all the help that I give him before that time comes.
Yes it is really neat to own such wonderful pieces of Americana, but to me it even more wonderful knowing that he will one day benifit from but one of my passions!

    God Bless you CaptKirk....

    Regards,

    RickieB

Great post Rickie. I just wish I had faith in the coming years to leave something for my kids, 2 girls, 6 and 10. I will be 50 this year and have been a tree climber/feller for all my life. My only retirement is my collection, which I value at about $2,000. Seems like I've worked very hard and haven't gotten anywhere. I blew a lot of money going to college twice, second time straight A's, but couldn't find a job, I believe because my hair is gray. Problem is that arthritis is crippling me now, fell out of too many trees. It literally hurts to get up and work all day. I don't know where I am going with this post, just feeling down right now. I am glad that some of you guys can afford the higher end stuff, so I get to at least see them. the only way I can get enough for retirement is to get killed at work, $100,000 insurance. Sorry for such a gloomy post. Kirk

Captiankirk. Slow down brother. Most of us have been down, but dont pull that George Bailey crap on us. You have kids, friend. Thats worth more than any coin or note in my opinion. Thats your legacy dude! Remember this. 'I cried because I had no shoes, until I saw a man that had no feet.' Oh, and by the way; 100k wont get your family very far . Better increase that policy to 500k at the least.

    Kirk... man, listen to Craig.

I do agree with this though. :thumb:
The only other time I'd get to see this would be at shows, and that's not very often. - and who knows if they'd let me see it close up?

Rickie, do tell us when you have the note in hand, I'd love to see some larger scans.

    Hello Magman....

Currently looking at several notes, that was one that just stuck out to me. Have not decided to pull the trigger yet as the other 3 are just incredibile!

As soon as I do decide and work out terms I will be happy to post it in a larger size, whatever note it ends up being.

FYI RickieB, no pressure, but I know where this note is;) Just be thankful we are not talking about the $20 from 1863 here. I believe this note represents a better value than the 1896 SC $5

    Hey Spock1 how are you?

The price for the note is in line...the range I am looking at is between that and 9.5K....just weighing my options at the moment.
I thought I would go for a really nice note due to a winfall $$$$

I think some of you guys may have missed a key part of RickieB's question. Sure, $5500 might be a fair price to buy it, but what part of that price is most likely due to dealer(s) markup?

I'm guessing that with a note like this, that there is probably two dealers involved in the exchange from one collector to another (one to handle the sale, and one to handle the buyer). As a result, just because he would be paying $5500, I'm guessing that the last collector to sell it only got $4000 or even less.

Am I right RickieB, are you trying to get an estimate of how much of that $5500 is due to dealer(s) markup?

    You are correct Gatzdon....
That is the largest factor in my decision on which note to purchase.

I have seen the note on the dealer's site, along with a lot of other nice stuff. If it was me, I would not be determining my purchase based on what I thought the dealer might be making on the note, but rather the price overall. Unfortunately with items like these, where they are, it is not like in my local dealer where I haggle over prices all the time. I wonder that the price of the note would be higher also in a well advertised ie Heritage or Stacks than on the dealers page?

I hope I am not coming across the wrong way on this! I have nothing against a Dealer making some $$$, after all it is his time and money that made the note available to us all.
I have had great experiences with a few select Dearls I work with and I respect them all. Trying to find the true value of a note like this is rather difficult at best. For me, I am just trying to gage the actual cost and make the best decision that I will have to live with.
This particular Dealer just happens to a Great person and I have worked with him many times before. There are cost's involved with finding and buying notes of this grade and I accept that as what it is.

Thank you for all your input, I appreciate it very much guy's.

    Regards,

    RickieB

Rickie why not make him a offer that you think is fair, he can either say yes or no and nothing is lost. As it is the note is sitting there and how soon before he can sell it :D

I don't think you came across wrong RickieB - we all ask for advice around here all the time. Nothing wrong with that regardless of who the seller is. Any smart buyer should do their research and make sure they are willing to live with a purchase. After all, we are not talking about 45-S Nickel in MS condition - we are talking about a serious piece of Americana/Art/High End Collectible Note. I would appreciate any feedback from knowledgeable friends I could get prior to making a buy like that. If the seller was to take offence to that I would be surprised that you had done business there more than once. ~ It's all good my friend ~ Darryl

Sometimes, well, most of the time, we have to reach high when trying for the toughies, better material, and so does the dealer.

I don't know paper, but I can compare this to a tough date, high grade coin. Forget the sheet in most cases.

The $5 from this series is one I have one of, but in a poor grade. I would really like a CU example of the $20.
