I've actually followed this forum for a while but just decided to post.
I was never a coin roll hunter but decided to give it a try. I bought a sealed Loomis $500 box of halves- just finished going through them and didn't find a single 40/90 Kennedy. No Franklins or Walkers either obviously- YouTube makes it seem so simple. I guess I should actually look at dates- but I just looked to see if there was a copper band on the edge. Everyone of them had one. The ones where it was questionable I pulled and looked at the dates but I think the earliest date I saw was a 71. I think I'm going to look through them a second time more closely but I don't think there's anything in that box.
How common is it to strike out completely as I have. When you guys find silver halves searching rolls, do you find them in every box or is it common to not find any in some boxes. I was surprised at how circulated and dirty the halves were since I haven't seen halves in circulation in forever. The Subway wouldn't take them when I tried to buy lunch. As soon as I find a good way to sell the ones I have I'm going to try again.
I have a box of quarters and nickels too. I'm looking for some 2019 Ws and I don't know why I got the nickels. I think it was just a matter of being at the bank and it was like, "Well, since I'm here I might as well get a box of nickels." I think it'll be fun to go through- at least once.

@3_Legged_Sam First off-welcome to Coin Talk. Next-every box is a hit or miss scenario. You Tube is not recommended by most of us, this is the place to be. Aside from just looking for silver you might want to expand and also look for errors and varieties. Many of us here do this. Again, it's hit or miss but can be a lot of fun. A good site to look at for answering any questions you may have on this extension of the hobby can be www.doubleddie.co. John Wexler's site has an amazing amount of free material, is an expert on the subject. Hours of reading, all given freely by him and will help you avoid the pitfalls of what is not an error or variety. You likely won't get rich quick but it can be a world of fun. If you decide this is also to your liking, you may want to invest in the Cherry Pickers Guide to Errors & Varieties Vol. 1 & 2 which sorts out all major errors, gives ball park prices for their value, loaded with clear photos, etc. Look forward to also seeing some of your finds when they happen. Happy collecting to you.

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

It was about 7 years ago that silver nearly hit $50/oz. That is when everybody and their great-grandmother started searching rolls for silver. Half dollars were one of the first "targets" because they contained the most silver (.36169 oz. per coin). I started searching half dollar rolls back in the 90's. Unfortunately, for you "late-comers" the well has been pretty much run dry. Even quarter and dime searches are proving less fruitful, and the only nickels that contain any silver are the war nickels, 1942-1945, that have a large mintmark above the dome of Monticello.

Yes, it is possible to find rolls that have been wrapped by customers which contain silver coins, but that is extremely rare. Even the tellers are getting smart and buying these rolls for themselves.

Don't believe the crap you hear on BoobTube. All most of them care about is their rating.

Sam - keep in mind that there are collectors and silver searchers competing in the same space. You don't have this problem with other coinage (cents and likely nickels) because it's mainly a collectors' event. If you are only after silver, edge reviews allow you to expedite the activity. Serious searchers are searching thousands of dollars a week; single box activity is more relegated to the collector event. If your ambition is to collect, then you'll slow down the operation and start to look for dates, mms, and varieties of interest. Finding silver then becomes a more ancillary event. To each their own; if you are in it for the silver you will have to expand your budget and work with your banks. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not looking exclusively for silver- I have a pretty decent collection of silver Kennedy's, Walkers, and Franklins. I couldn't imagine selling them to be melted regardless of the melt value. I'd actually like to find some coins that are collectible- but haven't done in a long time (silver quarter and dimes and plenty of wheat cents). I searched the edge first simply because I did it at work and was looking for a quick dopamine rush. My other hobbies have been put on hiatus having a two year old running around- but I figured this would be a good time to try to find some mint errors, silver halves, W-quarters, etc.
So can any of you confirm that the Cherrypicker's Guide is only digital currently. I saw some astronomically priced paperbacks and very affordable Kindle editions. I just prefer real paper.

Not sure what is going on with the pricing on these. The prices on Ebay & Amazon are ridiculous. I believe the latest edition is #6. You might want to check Wizard Coin Supply www.wizardcoinsupply.com and/or JP's Corner www.jpscorner.com or Brooklyn Gallery www.brooklyngallery.com to see if they have a hard copy available and should be around $30.00 +/-. They are all online.

They're decently priced at those storefronts but are all out of stock. That happens with popular books that sell out. Hope they print a new edition soon. Until then I guess I'll pick up the digital versions.

I was going to mention, but was unsure about the correctness...but since F&W Media went bankrupt I have begun to wonder if they might have had a lock on the distribution of many publications. It may be they are trying to unload what they had as part of the sale of this company to reduce overhead. Perhaps someone else knows more about this situation and might jump in on this. DANSCO is not fairing much better. Several popular albums have been out of stock for over 1 1/2 years. I'm still looking for a new Vol.2 of the Morgan Dollar album set. If you have a decent sized library with a well stocked hobby section, you might try that before investing in the digital copies. They even might want to sell a copy if it has not seen much activity. Just a thought.

It's also sold out at www.whitman.com the publishers. But they do have email contact so you could see when it might be in stock again.
