You do not need high level French to understand - 14,528 coins discovered by a farmer in 2011, currently in the museum in Caen. Half were cleaned and identified to date. There will be an expo in the museum in Rouen between 24 Nov 2019-23 Feb 2020, but not much detail on what will be exposed.

    Fun find!

I couldn't understand the video, but it seems like the archaeologists working on disassembling the hoard were fairly knowledgeable - I always cringe whenever I see an "expert" point to a totally obvious coin and go on about how difficult the process of identification will be.

I suspect that with a support team to organize and jot notes for us, many of us could ID most of the 14,528 in a couple weeks, not a couple decades.

Amen. I think you are quite right about that. I once attributed 500 LRBs in one sitting, about 6 hours. After the 70th falling horsemen type I was getting a bit bleery eyed, and then I started running into bushels of coins of Arcadius. Back to Constantine and sons and oodles of campgates, gloria excercitus, and veiled Constantines. Just one Helena, though. Whoo!

Also, I had coin dreams that night. Kind of like when I worked in Alaska during college one summer and handled like 1,000 sockeye salmon per day. At night time I would have fish dreams.

They probably do know what it is, just say it'll be hard to identify so they can be hailed as so smart when they've got it.

LOL, that reminds me of the famous Fountain I saw in Bruges, Belgium (a part of Belgium that speaks French.)

...and that is the way of the world. I regret you had to learn that so young. :( All I ask is that you try not to be as bad as my generation in this and so many other ways.

I don't care if they are all Fallen Horsemen, I would love to sort through all those!

I bought a 1.5 kilo "hoard" from an uncleaned supplier, hence the need for the attribution, but yeah it was fun to go through.

Would be nice if this were eventually sold to collectors - more likely it will end up in the basement of a museum somewhere, slowly being consumed by bronze disease.
