As you may have seen, I sold off even more of my US collection. I earned some pretty good money on it, and bought some stuff with the profits. First off, a silver siglos of the Achaemenid (Persian) Empire. This is the coin that could have been used in the movie The 300. Note the incuse bankers mark on the edge, a beautiful archaic eye. Achaemenid Empire AR – siglos 15mm, 5.53 g Persia, 450-330 BC Stylized king running r. with dagger poised to thrust and bow rectangular incuse punch Carradice type IV Next is a denarius of the Roman Republic, minted by the money C. Mamilius Limetanus. This coin caught my eye because, on the reverse, it shows Ulysses with his dog Argus, a famous scene from The Odyssey. Roman Republic C Mamilius Limetanus, 82 BC AR denarius draped bust of Mercury r. with caduceus over shoulder Ulysses standing r., holding staff in l. hand and extending his r. hand to his dog Argus C MAMIL to l., LIMETAN to r. Sydenham 741, Crawford 362/1 And finally (to steal a term from stainless) the mojo. A gold solidus of Constantius II, my first piece of ancient gold. Constantius II AV – Solidus, 21 mm, 4.05g Antioch, 337-361 AD FL IVL CONSTAN-TIVS PERP AVG draped, cuirassed bust r. GLORIA REI-PVBLICAE Roma and Constantinopolis seated holding hield with VOT/XX/MVLT/XXX SMANI in ex. RIC VIII Antioch 83
nice very nice I'm glad you post some details about what you purchased makes it even more interesting. Where did you aquire them from? oh and congrats on ur first gold piece:thumb:
All three were from the vcoins dealer Ephesus Numismatics. Their lower-quality stuff is a little more than what I'd pay, but their high-end stuff is set at comparatively low prices.
wow, very nice. Man this site is killing my wallet. Lincolns, morgans, AND ancients now. I cant stop, especially when I see such nice examples as these. Nice buys and I hope your happy with them! Are there any Ancient books you would recommend for general knowledge, Like how to grade them and stuff. Is grading more lenient on coins like these considering they are around 2000 years old?
Nice coins. I have bought several excellent Roman Imperial coins from Ephesus (Dr. Paul J. Landsberg and Tom Wood) with great satisfaction. James
I'll just echo the others by saying you made a few great buys.... We really should have a thread here where people can call out good sellers like Ephesus. I have bought from them as well and I am always pleased.
I love ancient gold. I hope to have a job that pays well enough in the future to buy some for myself. Only found silver with the metal detector. Great coins.
1 word . cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rzage
Very nice coins... Congratulations! I particularly like the siglos (I like the eye as well). I like the Constantius II Solidus, but don't know much about it.
