Crusty pl 55. I like it a lot. I almost went 58 but saw just enough high point rub to drop down one. The 75 is an underrated coin
Ah, I forgot about that coin! Thanks for finding that. I tried a bootleg setup with a 20x loupe and my iPhone for fun, has some nice color under a lamp. Will reveal here in a few
There were only two die marriages for 1875- With the first die pairing (BF-1, this coin), there are two distinctly different die states... after striking a number of both proof and circulation strikes, the dies received a heavy re-polishing to strike more proofs and eventually more non proof coins. By the looks of all the die polish on this coin I’m guessing it is an early strike of the later batch of business strikes. Source: doubledimes.com
I really like the old NGC holders, if it was all scratched up I would consider cracking but I love the coin as-is. ...The AU58 in CoinFacts has a very similar look to the fields and seemingly disproportionate amount of visible luster to amount of detail present. Wish I had a crystal ball to see what these coins looked like straight out of the mint.
While it did seem like an old holder to me (IDK just guessing) may be one reason for the lower than expected grade. They were a little tighter on the grades then, and looser now. The value would take a big bump if they decided now it was MS 62 PL. (I'm still at 58).
58 details due to very slight high-point rub. Whether it would straight grade or not is hard to say for sure without seeing it in person.
I've never heard of a coin getting a details grade for having wear... are you saying its cleaned at a high point or circulated with wear, because thats what AU is...
I think by details he was referring specifically to the numerical amount of wear on the coin. As far as straight grade; I posted the photos above to show more of an in-hand view of the surfaces. They look reflective in straight on shots but the skin is actually nice.
I thought it very pretty and I like it a lot. I think today it could easily be 55-58. I could see it as a cac at 55 too. But I’m with you I like the old holders. Nice coin I’d be happy to own
Yes, the 58 referred to the amount of rub I see. I'm not saying the services would call it "AU-58, details".
Nice coin was going to wager a 55 guess. With how overpriced these get in MS that's a nice coin to acquire get all the meat at a fraction of the cost. Edit: you know what I retract the overpriced part looking at the pop numbers. I thought these were way more common in MS and actually there aren't a ton and with the popularity of type collecting maybe they aren't overpriced in MS. Still a good grade to buy at though.
