I was fortunate that my father had a nice collection of Morgans. My brother and I split the collection. I divided the collection up and I let him choose which "stack" he wanted. That was in 1997. I knew very little back then. I got 19. I bought 10 1921 BU from "magic mike". They were nice, I think. 8 were 1921, then 1 1921 D, and another a 1921 S. After that, I decided I needed to learn a bit more. A friend of mine had a couple Morgans, an 1880 S, NGC MS64 and an 1881 S, NGC MS 63. Then I got bold and bought a "Western Collection" over the internet. I still didn't know much, but I really like what I got. It had an 1882 CC, 1883 CC, and 1884 CC, all graded NGC MS 65. It did cost me $1K. They're in a SDB at me credit union.

yeah. unfortunately the person who stole them was a complete waste of a human being and probably pawned them one by one for drug money.

Nice coin! I'm not an expert VAMer, but it appears you have VAM-11. Notice how the date is slanted with the 2 being higher than the 1. This occurs with VAM-7, VAM-11 and VAM-14. On the reverse, the CC is also slanted with the right C touching the wreath. This plus the distance between the bottom point of the neck and base of the 1 makes it VAM-11 if I'm right.

I own 2Morgan CCs and just as a gauge I took them to 2 different coin shops. One does a lot of newspaper advertising always promising the highest prices paid. They offered me $40 each. I took them to another shop that is very low key. They offered $400 each. Shocking but not unexpected.

I have been to a few LCS and that’s what really makes me think twice about buying raw Morgan’s. One shop has what I think is a XF and another has a MS and between them is $50 or a little more. Maybe it’s the grading I still need to learn. I have seen a heritage auction some sell a lot highly being ms 63 then MS 62....... has anybody GTG is the OP’s coin?? @calcol has sling in a curve ball..

You might consider leaving this coin raw and buying slabbed next time in his honor.

Morgans are full of varieties. VAM is the variety. Read what he said and research it. You may surprise yourself. :)

It takes a little time. I have the "Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars" and it's full of information and the "Top 100 Vam Keys" I'm sure there are more. Good luck with your search and always check the specs on the Morgan silver dollars, its a good idea to avoid buying a fake.
