Well I bought some hammerd bits on Evilbay the other day and they have arrived, now as I dont have access to any of my books and no real idea at all as to what they are LOL I thought I would link the scans http://www.omnicoin.com/coin_view_enlarge.aspx?id=948219 http://www.omnicoin.com/coin_view_enlarge.aspx?id=948220 http://www.omnicoin.com/coin_view_enlarge.aspx?id=948221 http://www.omnicoin.com/coin_view_enlarge.aspx?id=948222 http://www.omnicoin.com/coin_view_enlarge.aspx?id=948223 I think that the last one with the head n shoulders of the king visable is possibly Edward but not sure which one LOL
#4 is a sovereign type penny of Henry VIII, minted at Durham under Archbishop Tunstall, Spink 2354, 1530-1544.
This is what I have so far then #5 Edward III Penny/Halfpenny depending on diameter, is of York mint, circa 1355 #2 Sovereign type penny of Henry VIII, minted at Durham CD beside shield so Archbishop Tunstall, Spink 2354, 1530-1544 #1 Halfpenny of Henry VI, too worn to tell, but it is of London mint King of England 1422–1461 & 1470–1471
Hi De Orc, just wondering 1) how do you know #5 is from York (i.e. what's the MM) 2) what's the most affordable York minted coin in nice F/VF condition. I didn't pick up numismatics until i moved over here and despite living in York for 20+ years never knew they minted coins there. Now I have to have one
It was Id'd by Clive the owner of http://historiccoinage.com on another forum LOL I think that even the Romans minted coins there as I believe did the Vikings. I realy like walking round york, it realy is a lovely city.
Yeah, it's a great place, with so much history. Constantine was declared Roman emperor there. At that time the city was known as Eboracum. There are still some small portions of the Roman defensive wall as well as many below ground remains (e.g. a bath house under a pub ) After that come the Vikings and Eboracum becomes Jorvik. I wasn't aware of the later coin production though. Seems pretty obvious that there was some earlier though. Thanks for the quick response
Eboracum was not a major Roman mint (it may have been a minor one under Caruasius and Allectus, but I'm not sure). It did mint coins from the Anglo-Saxon period until the English Civil War, though. There isn't a mintmark on the coin, but the reverse legend reads CIVITAS EBORAC (or similar). Coins from this mint are rather common, probably second only to London mint. Here's a decent one, but a little over priced. I'd look for something closer to $50 or $60. http://www.vcoins.com/ancient/yorkcoins/store/viewItem.asp?idProduct=2752&large=0
edward I De Orc since you keep posting my relatives I figured I would post the only one I currently have. the dealer had about 20 different EDware I's but this one was the only one with a discernable face. It was also the least expensive at $35
That is rather nice, quite a clear face I have a couple more on the way and hope to be able to add scans shortly :thumb:
