Is there a sure fire way to tell the difference between a Philly mint cent and a proof? I've looked at different books and I can't seem to find any info. I've got both coins in my Lincoln set and they both have an almost brilliant finish. I would post pictures but my scanner is crap and can't seem to get a good picture of either coin. Thanks for any info! Doug
Welcome to the forum Doug A proof will show no weakness whatsover, and have sharp, square rims, very " beefy " rims compared to a business strike. It will be obvious when comparing a proof to a non proof.
Welcome to the forum! With those dates, it's normally quite obvious to tell the difference between a business strike, and a proof. In 1936, there were 2 different types I believe, the "satin" proof, and the brilliant proof. I might suggest buying the Lange book, The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents .
