    Hi guys,

This one has been bugging me for a while. This 1901 has some sort of crack just below the date. There seem to be some other strange marks below the feathers and in other areas of the fields.

Any help in what this is from would be most appreciated.

I am guessing a die crack.

It looks like an odd strike-through of some sort. Very interesting coin.

I could be off on this one, Please correct if I am wrong. My first shot at this. A die crack occurs when a small break in the die allows metal to flow into the damaged area during striking. On the surface of the coin, this appears as a thin, irregular, raised line. it looks like a deep scratch in the rim.

It looks like someone was outlining the denticles on the right side and their knife slipped.....PMD(Post Mint Damage).;)

Thanks for the responses. I will just add it to my collection of non errors. I only paid $2 for it.

    Thanks again.

Could it be post-mint damage as well?

    Damage

I think that is what was determined. Still not sure what those marks are coming off the feathers. Maybe some sort of chemical staining.

Looks like post mint damage on the denticles. The other mark by the feather looks like it might be a drop of some liquid hit the coin and traveled down towards the rim. If it was some common liquid it might just wash off with distilled water. Then again it may have reacted chemically with the metal.

I'd try distilled water and then air dry on a soft cloth.
