OK we did " The Best Deal In Your Life " How about your worst blunder , when I was a kid my dad started a Peace Dollar collection for me , he had mostly early 20s that he got in everyday use in his teens , well he decided to buy me some keys he , bought a 21 , 28 , & 1 from the 30s . Well the carnival came to our neighborhood , I was about 9 at the time , didn't know squat about coins so I thought the older the more valuable , I "borrowed the 28 & the one from the late 30s . Never did anything like that again , lets just say my dad wasn't very happy , and I lost the best coin I had at the time . rzage:whistle::headbang:
:goof: Bonediger was a 22 yr old naive young man in 1982 and had an apartment in Nacogdoches, Tx which I let an Ex-Girlfriend (who I thought was on the up and up) use for a month while I was away in 'Basic Training" at San Antonio; this after graduating from SFASU (Forestry Degree) that spring of 82. If I recall correctly I think my lease went thru the fall of that year. To make a long story short she cleaned me out. 16 Seated & 5 Morgan Silver Dollars, all in MS/AU condition, sorry I don't recall the dates and other minor coins. I checked with the local coin shops but this alas no luck. The chances of recovering a loss like this back then were NIL... Take Care Ben
my worst blunder to date is probably just now figuring out what i have been missing out on for the 21 years i have been throwing change and bills around.:desk:
Me too with the Silver dollars. When I was a lot younger and thought fun and girls were really what was important, I used a lot of Silver Dollars at a place called Riverview, amusement park in the Chicago area. Although a coin collector from way back in the 40's, I really had no idea of values of coins. My Dad always gave me Silver Dollars and as fast as he gave them to me I'd spend them at that amusement park. Of course you must remember that at that time all Silver coins were common. Roosevelt Dimes were just coming out, Most Liberty Head coins were always in change so blowing several Silver Dollars to impress some girl was what had to be done.
One heck of a party town. Had a different feel, less cowboyish and more cosmopolitian than that of Huntsville IMHO. If you couldn't have fun in Nac you weren't trying they said... Take Care Ben (Using back up computer today, no spell check)
Stupidest numismatic mistake, buying a Hamburg 20 Mk coin from 1910 in Hamburg Germany. Problem is, there is not a real coin from that date. Only fakes.
Biggest mistake: Buying a 1950D Jefferson nickle (BU) for $24.00 back in 1964. Being a young collector at the time I didn't know that dealers had stockpiled rolls of this coin. Yet another example of a low mintage coin that can be had for a relatively low price....I think you can pick one up today for roughly what I paid back then. Who knew?
My worst blunder: passing on a 1901 S Barber quarter in G-6 for $3,000 because the bid/ask spread was too high. It was $3,000 ask in VG at the time. so.............. I am still aggravated about that one. Then there was the time that I was patiently wait for my favorite dealer to set up and another dealer came over and took a 1916 Standing Lib out of the case & said he wanted it. I was waiting for my turn and should have spoken up. It was also $3,000 but in Fine-12.
I hate seeing the amazing deals go by and ya just don't have the cash. I just saw a 1/3 ounce platinum proof coin sell on ebay for $600. I remember back when i first started collecting gold was at £350 ($700) an ounce. I could get a nice 1/10 gold for £40 ($80). But I stuck with silver instead. I'm not an investor and don't plan on re-selling what I have, but now I like gold that coin I could have had a year ago is now a $100+ more.
Here is an earlier post about the copy. The seller decided to return my payment and gave up on the coin as well. I did have to file a 'Postal Fraud' case against them. It is an rather unpleasant memory in my numismatic adventure. http://www.cointalk.org/showthread.php?t=13476
My worst one: Ever see the commercial for "Kaboom"? Where the do the "penny test"? Well, I decided to experiment with some coins of mine, and then the rest is history. (Luckily I wasn't too far into coin collecting at the time, and didn't have anything really rare, but, still...) Phoenix
