When I saw this my jaw dropped. It's being auctioned on CNG now at https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=393020 and if it wasn't that I already have a pretty nice Constantine II I'd go all in on this one. This gave me an idea for a thread. What coin due to its condition wowed you? Rasiel
I can’t argue with you @Suarez ! That’s drop dead gorgeous! I sold off my late Roman coins and no longer collect them but I can still appreciate and respect them. I hate to use the term “museum quality” because that coin is better than that.
I LOVE Weird Al. My first ever concert. I went with my parents (HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!) to the Nebraska State Fair (Keep piling on the coolness) to see him during his Bad Hair Day Tour.
Amazing coin Rasiel. It's hard to believe a coin could survive in such a pristine condition. Must have been kept away from all moisture and as little exposure to oxygen and other gases as possible.
Here is a favorite "wowser" of mine . and another one. Antioch, Syria, Philip II, AD 247-249, Billon Tetradrachm: 13.37 gm, 28 mm, 1 H.
I dont typically purchase based on condition as I prefer coins that have some wear. Most of my coins are VF and under, but here is the last coin I bought that I said 'wow, I gotta have that!' Hadrian, 117 – 138 AD Æ As, Rome Mint for circulation in Syria, 24mm, 6.90 grams Obverse: HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, Laureate and draped bust of Hadrian right. Reverse: COS III S C, Griffin springing right. References: RIC 681 // RPC 3759 // McAlee 549
Truly impressive engraving which the condition shows off to full advantage. Sweet! The first coin that comes to mind where condition (& engraving) wowed me is my Julian bull:
Here's one of my wowsers, still fully silvered: Maximinus II ("Daia"), A.D. 310-313 Bronze Nummus Antioch mint, A.D. 312 Obv: IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMINVS P F AVG Rev: GENIO AVGVSTI - Genius, modius on head, naked but for chlamys hanging from shoulder, holding head of Sol and cornucopiae ANT in exergue; [star] in left field, S in right RIC 164b 22mm, 4.7g. This brings up a question. It seems like there are a lot of coins of Maximinus II with a GENIO reverse that are still in pretty amazing states of preservation to be had relatively inexpensively. Has anyone else noticed this? I think I've owned this coin for around 5-6 years.
