Rare Alexandrian Elagabalus Tetradrachm

I have been in the market for a long while for an Alexandrian Tetradrachm of Elagabalus.

They appear now and then but not in the price range I am willing to pay.

I finally got one from a dealer that had many available, I decided on getting this particular one because it was the scariest for the year and had a better weight.

Despite being a "boring eagle", the others were not much better with Nike or some other god reverse. And this eagle stance is different than the more common eagle reverses for him.

I only found one other example & it was on Numiscorner stock.

Serapis does not particularly like being called 'not much better' than a bird but he is the only Alexandria Elagabalus I have. Year 5

 

I've always liked that coin, Doug.

 

I went shopping in Emmett and saw only a couple rarity 1 or 2 types I'd call special but have seen few of Elagabalus of any design so we probably should take what we can find and be happy. Severus Alexander is about the only Severan I see in any quantity. I suspect that if we had a thread asking for all Alexandrians From Pertinax through Elagabalus and if everyone cooperated we would be lucky to see a dozen coins. Commodus issued so many, the demand for new ones was low for twenty years. I assume there is a special out there who owns a hundred of them but we have not seen them.

Mine is also a boring Year 4 Eagle (with the slightly less boring stance? ) Picture and description are CNG’s.
