Not sure what's with this penny

Found this 1995 D penny copper peeling off weird stuff forming on it (not sure if that's the zinc reacting to something) but whatever this is it's definitely an odd duck.

Environmental Damage. Looks like something acidic affected the copper plating.

Finally an explanation I can relate to DBS "Dried Beard Sauce". I think zinc's time has long past and they need to go back to the drawing board. Thanks to everyone for the help it was the first time I could actually see the layer of copper pealing off a penny had only seen pictures.

Put it in a glass jar and take a picture of it each day, showing the progress of its self-destruction.

 

Once a month would probably be often enough, they don't rot that fast.
