I just wanted to say that I love this set this year. I know some people feel that the mint is going overboard with commemoratives but, I enjoy collecting commemoratives and it's neat that this year I got back into the hobby and they have such a cool commemorative set out. I really love the half dollar design. I just bought an NGC PF 70 UC Silver dollar and the pair of the half dollars in MS70/PF70. Plan on getting the proof gold before long as well. Probably just buy it from the mint. This is kind of a personal set to me. The bald eagle is a magnificent bird and it's comeback I've been able to personally witness in my lifetime. I live very close to the Mississippi river in northern Illinois. As a kid, I remember when riding in the car, a bald eagle was a rare and somewhat exciting site. You might see one or two out on the ice on the river. Or occasionally see one fly over. You'd never see more than a handful a year. Now, they're everywhere! The comeback has been simply amazing. Now it's nothing to see 40, 50, 100 or more flying around the lock and dams. Now you can see them almost daily. Even 10-20 miles away from the river. Just saying, it's really been something to watch over the years and in my opinion, was a worthy cause to commemorate such a successful conservation program.
I hope these coins will become like fine wine.... get better in time. There are many coins I purchase to add to a set, but may not look at them for some time. Then a few years go by and I whip out the coin and I fall in love with it all over again. I really like the bald eagle design this year, but I am not crazy over it like I have been for the past couple of years on some other designs like the 01 Buffalo. Didn't like it at first, but then in 04 I whipped it out and bam! I loved it. And no funny comments from the peanut gallery... and that mean you Pheonix!
I received both the dollar and half dollar from the mint and love them both. I also like commemerative coins and Iam always on the look out for new ones to add to the collection
I purchased the proof and uncirculated silver coins and the two half dollars. The lady at the post office talked me out of the silver proof. She wanted me to order on for a birthday present for her husband. Knowing the mint I could not assure her that I would get it in time, so I let her have mine at cost. It went up a couple of bucks but what the heck, it was nice to see someone else enjoy the coin. Her husband loved it by the way.
Indians and Eagles, how can you go wrong with them!!! I still get a kick out of the 2001 Commem. Indian Head-Buffalo Dollar set everytime I take them out to check for aging problems!! I love the 3 coin set of Baldies too. I agree with the passion for commems, modern or older ones, I'm also an ardent collector of the Coin & Currency sets, got 'em all and can't wait for the next one!!
Bought the proof and Unc. dollar, half and five dollar from the mint....love them all but was dissappointed with the condition of the unc. half.
Finally saw a 50c that someone was selling and have fallen in love with the design. Can't wait to get the coin and then try to get others in the set. Smaugy...
I just ordered the Proof dollar a few days ago. From what I've seen of them they are beautiful coins. I'm not a commemorative coin collector but I like these enough to buy the 3 coin set.
I am surprised that the silver coins are still available. They are my favorite, both proofs and uncirculated.
Wow, this thread took off while I wasn't looking! Yeah, I love this set. I'm still waiting for mine to arrive though. I'm surprised the $5 golds haven't run out yet. With a mintage of only 100,000 I would have thought they'd be gone. I have to get that one yet. Maybe next month. I was looking through the commemoratives they've come out with in the red book the other day and ran across the 1992 Christopher Columbus commems. Just ordered a couple of them up too. The silver dollar obverse showing half the Santa Maria next to half the space shuttle Discovery was too cool of a design not to own! I'm also partial to the George Washington half from 82. My dad bought me a proof when I was a kid. Still have it. That was the first commemorative the mint put out since the 50s and the first 90% silver coin they produced since 64, it said in the RB. Pretty cool. I didn't realize they were silver. Great design.
Oh yeah. They'll always have a special place in my collection. Cool stuff. The affordable prices are a big plus too.
