Has anybody made a coffee table or other working surface which has a display of coins/currency beneath it under glass? Home stuff, rather than the epoxy bar at the local pub..

If you've done it, please post some pics and musings. It's one of the projects I'd like to do, but am not sure on the details yet.

Display cases are welcome also, but I'm focused on the aspect of drawing the collection into daily life, hence including them around "working surfaces."

The best I have seen were the toilet seats made in acrylic back in the 1970's that had coins in them, including a Morgan dollar in the center.

I haven't made anything out of nickel, but take a look at the things this artist has put together with the metal.

I do quite a bit of stuff on the lathe and have done many round shadow boxes for any number of different things. Fishing flies in particular, but many for coins.

A Shaker style table with three turned feet coming out at the base of a single stem with a 19" diameter glass-topped table in cherry has a functional and changeable display area. It was a big hit with a friend...

Currently I am making a trophy for a local fishing derby in memory of a friend that just died a couple months ago, leaving two very young sons and a wife. Another friend is donating some money, as is the Alaska Fly Fishers club. In total the winner of the sportsmanship prize will receive $500 and earn a permanent spot on the trophy. It will be a large shadow box atop a two-tiered platform with space for plaques provided and so on... but the top looks like nothing if not a large coin on edge.

Never have cared for the resined bar routine... YMMV

If I placed a glass top coffee table in my living room displaying coins I'm sure it wouldnt be long before the coins come up missing. With some of the characters in my family, I wouldnt trust half of them with a dollar laying on my kitchen counter. Its a great idea though if you have friends and family you can trust.

I enjoy upgrading sets... even if that set is friends... family has to be dumped, I suppose! ;)
