My dear friends all my posts on Coin Talk have always been about coins. They have rarely been about me other than once when I was really sick. Well i am going to break that rule today. It is with a sad heart that I announce that my collecting days are now over. I have been laid off from work today and will not be able to afford any more coins. My only fault was that I did not have high and powerful friends. In these trying times as I look forward to the future I see nothing. Although my collecting days are over the dream lives on that someday I will be able to complete my collection. I will continue to visit Coin Talk as much as possible and advise people on coins should they seek it. Most collectors have to go through a serious phase in their life where it takes a lot of will and determination to move to the next level. I worked very very hard to get where I am today and the hard work will continue. As they say the end of an era the beginning of another. The experience of collecting coins has been very rewarding for me. I have made a lot of friends and learned a lot about different cultures and countries. In this entire process I have tried to stay humble and help others out as much as I can with a touch of humor. That part of me will not change. i know many of you used to look forward to my posts with great eagerness. If god wills those days will return again and I will be able to buy even better coins. Till then live long and prosper. Spock
Spock, I am really sorry to hear that you have been laid off and you won't be able to purchase and post pictures of your new coins here on Coin Talk! I sincerely hope that you are able to find new and better employment very soon and that your collecting will soon start again! We all look forward to posts, pictures and the humor from you. May you, Kirk, Scotty and Mr. Zulu take the Enterprise on a voyage of coin collecting adventures where you have never been before! Frank
Wow, Spock I hate to admit, I am glad you only got laid off. For a second there you had me scared, really. Times will improve, take it easy for a cpl then see what life brings. My God, don't sound so " terminal ". You are amongst friends here. Jack
I'm sorry to hear about your temporary retirement Spock. Although you may not be buying any coins for a while, you have been very fortunate to own some fine pieces. More than alot of collectors have the chance to own. I will, for one, miss seeing pics of your new purchases but we can all still learn from your knowledge. There will come a day when we will be astounded by your new coin purchases again.
Hey there ol' buddy! Always look on the brighter side--you lost this job....but your next one is, and can be much better! What you need is some pep! Check out: http://www.getmotivated.com/ and if they are coming near you....go....it is WELL worth it! Yes I agree. I'm at a point in my collecting life where I have to put on the breaks, and do alot more work with and for my company. Hopefuly in less than a year the company will be on its feet where it needs to be and I'll be able to step back. Speedy
Wow Spock , You're a quality Guy and people like you don't stay down long , I'm sure you'll find something better than before , when I first started reading your thread I thought you were sick , remember you still have your health , hope to hear from you very soon . I'll be looking for your posts as your wisdom is needed here , thanks for everything , like getting me interested in Indian coins . Your friend Rusty
Sorry to hear about your layoff spock. Keep trying and remeber there always is a future. It can't be the end, just consider it a break for now. stainless
Spock. Let me tell you a little TRUE story. In 1994 I started a business with a gentleman that I had known for YEARS. We built it up to have 33 employees in 5 years and were making a boatload of money. I was spending about 500.00 a week on coins and it didn't put a dent in my personal budget. In 1999 I got a phone call and everything changed. My partner was stealing money from the company and I lost somewhere in the neighborhood of 7.5 Million. Everything gone in a blink of an eye. I had just purchased a new home that was in the range of my new income etc.. I went to work for a customer of mine as her GM did that for a few years and started the business I own now over again. At this point things are going great and I look back and say.. wow. Things look bleak right now I am sure. Everytime a door closes another door opens. Tell us where your at, (state) line of work your interested in and who knows... I know people all over the world and have business relations in many many states. Keep your chin up, and use this as a stepping stone for something better.
Wow Spock! It's not the end! Just a temporary break. You'll work again. I know it's easy for me to say but hang in there man. Good luck in the job hunt.
Sorry to hear about this little setback in your career. Most of us have been there at least once. I can empathise with how you must feel right now, but I figured out if I hadn't had some similar changes in my life, I wouldn't be where I am now in life. My life changed a lot after 9/11, but months later I realised it was all for the better, and I am thankful for having been laid off then and deciding to make a change in my career, going from finance into IT and Tech, learning a lot in the process, but most of all being able to be with my kids on my schedule. Setbacks stink but you can learn from them and squeeze the lemon handed you into lemonade.
Man spock, you had me worried for a little bit to be honest with you, when I read the title. Where, like Jack, I'm glad you only got laid off, but that still must be very hard. I'm glad though to see that you are still going to stick around, heck, I need someone to reply to my jokes. Lol, all joking aside, my best wishes to you man, and things I'm sure will get better. And if you ever need a baby-sitter for those coins, I'm always available. Best of luck man, and here's to bigger, and better things! :thumb: Phoenix
Spock, I am still working, but the economy is getting to me too, and I haven't bought many coins for a while now. C'mon up and hang out in the Enterprise anytime, we're parked in orbit till di-lithium goes down in price a bit.
Hang in there, I have not worked since 1/2006 but THE EARTH PROVIDES! Still have my house, food and get to get some coins. In that time I have gotten closer to both my parents, brother and grandpa than ever imagined. Enjoy your time off and spend it with friends and family. Side jobs for cash will help and as long as you keep making friends and maintaining the old, you will never be out work. If you decide to start your own business, I can help get U started, (business plans, state paperwork, tax writeoffs etc.) Just tell us what U want to do. I'm sure between all of us we can come up with something! Peace and good will.
WOW Spock.I really hope you will be able to get back on your feet without losing to much of what you have worked so hard for. I look forward to your posts, and I will continue to do so. NO EXCEPTIONS. Forgive me for bringing this into a topic, But I'm sure God has something bigger planned for you and this will just open your eyes to it. Sometimes all you have to do is stop, take a breath, and listen. Everything will be ok, it will be tough. But I'm sure you'll pull through it! God Bless, Take Care Shawn
I'm very sorry to hear about your loss of employment. I can relate a little bit, last year the largest employer in town closed their doors and put a couple thousand people out of work. I know several people that lost their jobs and have had to start over. I have faith that you will find something. From what I have learned of you here, you must be an inteligent person with a lot of drive. I'm sure it will be a stuggle but try and keep your head up a hope for the best. I hope you stick around to share your knowledge and humor. If worst comes to worst, you could start that Lincoln memorial collection you have always wanted to work on. hang tough.
Spock, With your eye, and a little start up, it might be the perfect time to start vest pocket dealing / flipping for some extra cash. It does work you know how to do it already. Look what happened to Clembo after all. Coins could become an income for a while, and possibly, your next career !!
Shock, what a spock! I mean Spock, what a shock! OK, enough of that... Listen to me, you half-Vulcan, losing a job isn't the end of the world. I imagined far worse, too, and am very happy to hear it's just this. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, too, but those are the breaks sometimes. There'll be other opportunities, you watch. Just keep that chin up! Eddie
Spock - I am sorry to hear about you losing your job. I know you had hinted at this a few weeks ago, but I am sorry to hear that it has taken place. I think most, if not everyone would agree that coin collecting is a tortuous hobby. No matter what a person's income level is, there is always that one coin or coins that are just out of reach. As a life long collector, I am constantly tortured by the fact that I may never be able to afford the high end coins due to my income level. Nevertheless, I enjoy collecting what I can, when I can. There are many breaks that I take in between purchases and it drives me nuts.... but that's just the way it goes. Doesn't mean that you have to completely stop. I know you are just down, but I can't imagine that you will completely stop collecting based on the sets that you have put together and the interest that you have exhibited in the hobby. Keep your head up and know that you have many friends here on CT and a friend here in WV. The lights are always on, door is open, food is warm and beds are comfortable.... as long as you don't mind sleeping with two dogs!!!
