Different from the usual, and part of a series... that's Doug McDoug all the way! I'll assume some trickery is going on with the photo. Here's my most similar coin, I guess from the same series...
I say it is @dougsmit , it just looks like something He would have to me. And then again it looks like something I would have. Here is the closest coin I have to it. Time of Domitian to Antonius Pius. AE quadrans Obv: Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Mars to right Rev: SC Curiass Ric II 19 14mm 2.49 grams , mint Rome
If the deciding factor is our desire to have these coins, I can lay claim to all five even though only one of the five is mine as of today. If this coin is not already mine mine today, I would be happy for the owner to send it to me for my 73 1/2 birthday tomorrow.
Roman Empire Divius Claudius Gothicus AE Quinarius(?), possibly struck at irregular mint in Gaul Dia.: 17 mm Wt.: 1.8 g Obv.: DIVO CLAVDIO; Radiate head right. Rev.: CONSECRATIO; Eagle standing left, head right. Ref.: RIC V-a 266(var)
Coming from a fellow collector of the grotty, something about the grottiness (even if this coin is quite decent for an Imperial quadrans) of this coin makes me think @dougsmit Like myself, he appreciates the coins for their historical value, even if their condition is not good enough to draw some. On the other hand, much the same could be said of @Curtisimo, but since I'm short on time I'll just let my initial hunch stand without further analysis! Here's the only quadrans I have a half decent photo of laying around:
I'm glad I saw this thread before the 5th one started! Not sure how I missed it... Anyways, my guess is @dougsmit. It just seems like a coin that he would like, though I think he would have a more in-depth description and more focused pictures...That being said, he is pretty wily and I could definitely see him doing his best to obfuscate and confuse. I don't have anything cool like the coin in question and I only have one coin with Mars on it so here goes: Caracalla Denarius 206 AD Obverse: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right Reverse: PONTIF TRP VIIII COS II, Mars in military dress standing left leaning on shield holding reversed spear ex @SeptimusT (note: these are not pictures. I couldn't get a good picture of the coin. I hope he doesn't mind)
I'm voting Doug on this one. I think the photo is so wonderful else's and the write up makes me think of him. Here's my only quadrans:
The thread doesn't quite need another bump yet but I am going to do it anyway. There are still plenty of folks who haven't weighed in yet. Everyone has till tomorrow afternoon to get their guesses in before we begin our 5th and final round.
I’m guessing Sir Doug Smith in this one, final answer! It looks like his kind of coin. Here’s a coin I completely forgot about. I’m pretty sure it was my bro’s first ancient. I have no idea if it’s real or not. But, it’s completely random. Have a great day all! Erin
Getting in my vote for @dougsmit before the close. As soon as I opened the thread and saw the coin I declared it a DS coin! Here's a pic of my 2nd ancient coin purchase back in Oct 2016:
This is a very hard one – if it had come earlier, I would probably guessed that it is @dougsmit 's coin. Yet, I already suggested him to be the owner of coin #2... Thus, I'll guess @Parthicus for this one. He mainly collects more eastern coins but has been known to stray, and this looks like a coin he might find aesthetically appealing. I don't have a quadrans from this series to show, but here is another coin showing Mars (and an impressive beard): Postumus, Gallic Roman Empire, AR antoninian, 263 AD, Trier mint. Obv: IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG; bust of Postumus, radiate, draped, cuirassed, r. Rev: P M TR P IIII COS III P P; Mars, walking r., holding spear in r. hand and trophy in l. hand. 21mm, 2.84g. Ref: Mairat 255; RIC V Postumus 57.
Note to Participants I will be updating the spreadsheet I am using to keep track of everyone’s guesses this evening and posting that to the master thread for general reference. The posting of Round 5 might push till tomorrow since I’ll be away from my computer for a while. Until Round 5 posts I will leave this thread open for guesses.
Today is election day here in Virginia where I live. If I can campaign for a couple more votes, I could finish here with half of the total votes cast. Some of the state office candidates here spent millions to gain a job that pays thousands. It makes no difference whether the coin in question is mine or not (I'm not saying). Truth has little relevance in politics. After you see coin #5, I hope to gather in even more votes than I got on #4. Vote early; vote often.
Oh... no wonder I'm confused. You are a few times zones west of me so your "you have until tomorrow" post is time stamped today on my view . Looking forward this weekend or whenever you post the answers!
I am not surprised you are confused. I’ve been bouncing around the country over the last few weeks testing my engineering superpowers against the anger of Mother Nature (Spoiler Alert: I lost the fight ). I don’t even remember what time zone I was in when I posted the last few rounds. Sorry if that has led to some confusion about when rounds close.
I think this belongs too @dougsmit because looks like he would have this coin lol here is one of mine not the best but cool!
I think it’s @dougsmit because the resining of owning the coin sounds like something he would say and he also appreciates and sees the beauty in a coin for what it is even if the quality is not the best. As for a picture of a coin I just like posting this one.
All right ladies and gentleman. This round is officially closed to further guesses. You still have one more shot to get in on the fun however. The final round is up and running. Coin #5 – GTCTer 2019 (The Final Round!)
