I have my eye on this coin, but i dont know anything about ancients. I was wondering how to go about finding out if this is too much or about average pricing. This`ll be my first ancient and dont really want to spend too much more then i ought to. Thank you guys, yall have been awesome here on this site. 20191104_100529.png

Hi Junior! Welcome to ancients :)

Here are some places to start:

Search for Hormazd II drachm here on CoinTalk to see examples posted by others, and probably some history of the coin

Check comparisons in auction archives (auction houses, not eBay) to get an idea of how this price compares. You'll have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples when it comes to condition, and don't forget that the hammer prices shown usually do not include buyer's premium.

Check for currently offered comps in "retail" outlets such as Vcoins

As I was typing this for you I glanced at the comparison links and while nice, I suspect the coin you've shown is overpriced.

Littleton falls into the class of dealers like APMEX who primarily cater to US coin collectors or bullion collectors buying their first ancient coin. Consequently they often have prices on the high end even for retail since they know their customers don't know the market. You basically don't hear of experienced ancient collectors buying from them at all.

Ancents do not have the equivalent of a Red Book where you can get even a rough idea of the relative cost/value of any coin. As a result, their are sellers who offer bargains and sellers who sell for ten times a fair price. That line drawing image makes it impossible to say whether that coin is overpriced or very overpriced. If you did not review the link TIF provided, you made a mistake.

I agree with the Deacon Ray suggestion but you might get a Sasanian of a lesser king (most common is Khusro II) for half that. My personal favorite is Peroz whose coins are well made compared to many. Many of the vCoins Sasanians are over what I consider reasonable. Shop around.
