I saw 2 of these go to auction this past year and I missed both of them. This is a mule of Titus and Vespasian. The reverse is a reverse of Vespasian but the obverse is definitely Titus. I find these coins really interesting. In my opinion the portrait is great and I love the toning as well. Titus Caesar AR Denarius circa 73, 19mm., 3.25g. Obv: Laureate head r. Rev. Emperor seated r. on curule chair, feet on footstool, holding sceptre and olive branch. C 158. RIC 554 [VESP] (R). Toned, Very Fine. From the M.J. Collection. Titus and his dad were definitely peas from the same pod, the likeness is uncanny. Titus, 79 AD, denarius Rome 3.41gm, radiate figure on rostral column, S2509, RIC 10, RSC 272,
Nice catch Andrew! I think @Ancient Aussie is right to point out the similar features between Vespasian and Titus. The uncanny resemblance likely helped to contribute to these mint mistakes. Here is my example of that mistake.
Nice one! I bid on it as well, but left the race a few bids below the final hammer. Congrats on the score.
That portrait is a show stopper! Way to go! Mines nothing near that beauty... But you asked for Titus portraits so I will oblige.
Here are several denominations of Titus - some asses celebrating the victory of the Judean war. 2 aurei ( both as Caesar ) , 3 denarii (as IMP and 2 as Caesar) , 2 sestertii, and 2 asses,( both as Caesar).
That's another great coin! The portrait is indeed lovely. It is always nice to see so many Titus coins in this thread when you have read recent the biography by Suetonius over the life of Titus (no, it was not the first time that I read that).
Congratulations on your fine addition. Here's my coins of Titus. Still in the process of properly picturing and adding texts... The coin below of Titus as Caesar, ihas the same reverse as the one of his father. Quite similar too, are their faces. Especially in comparison to the other denarius of Titus when he became emperor. T CAESAR IMP VESPASIAN, laureate head right IOVIS CVSTOS, Jupiter standing facing sacrificing out of patera over altar and holding sceptre. Denarius, 18 mm , 3,41 gr Sear 2444 (var), RIC 863 [vesp] Same reverse, of Vespasianus:
Great coin, super portrait, @Orfew ! Daddy and Tyke were TWINS! TITUS RI Titus 79-81 CE AR Denarius Ceres seated corn ear poppy torch VESPASIAN RI Vespasian 69-79 CE AR Denarius Jupiter Sacrificing IOVI CONSERVAT
Very nice coins, @Orfew ! I think that if I could own only one Roman coin, I would select a Vespasian denomination. Here is one that I received only recently. It’s still sitting near my inbox with the shipping envelope. I’m still admiring it and have not moved it to the storage closet where the rest of my collection resides.
