Hi all. As I probably already mentioned, I am the Bass intern at the ANA this summer. I am beginning to research my paper and was wondering what format to use. I am most familiar with MLA, but that is for writing about literature. What format should I use in numismatics?

They aren't particularly concerned about the form of your citation. Check with whoever you wish to publish it with. Obviously, The Numismatist is going to be more lax than the American Numismatic Society Journal.

MLA is not just for literature

I think it has professionalism to it (even if you put your instructor's name)

When I was in grad school, they used to make us use something called The Chicago Manual of Style, which I think is more geared toward academic research than the MLA. Most libraries would have a dozen or so copies of this one as well as the MLA. You can also get them really cheap at second hand bookstores near any university. I think the Chicago Manual is far more detailed about how to do citations than the MLA is, but then it's been a decade since I've even looked at either of them.
