1982 small date silver penny?

    Is this real or plated? I also thought the date looked like a combo of small and large with the very curved 2, but the large 8. And what’s more if it was struck on a dime planchet it should be much thinner. So many questions...

    It appears to be a zinc coating.
    The chem labs in middle and high school/college use the process to show electrolysis. Search make silver and gold pennies and you can see.

    You can use the "tissue test" putting a silver coin such as a bullion coin and the cent under a kleenex type of tissue paper. Silver is much more reflective than zinc and if the cent shines as much through as the silver bullion coins, you have some support.
