http://cgi.ebay.com/1853-O-Seated-L...ryZ11970QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem From this picture, I can't tell. I've been wanting one and I'm really liking this one.
Spider, I will not disagree with your conclusion because I am unfamiliar with this seller, but he has one of the best feedbacks - particularly with their new calculations.
Thanks for the heads up. Not a big deal. There's plenty more out there. Looking for one is half the fun.
He overgrades sometimes and his prices are strong, but if you find something you like, I say go for it. I don't find his prices too out of line and he always lists the problems on his coins, which is kind of refreshing. There are a lot of worse sellers than ernie.
I'm not that nice Becky. I think ernie drastically over-grades, he does not always list cleaning issues or other problems. His prices are sometimes outrageous. But I will say this, I have bought coins from ernie and I got what I expected to get and was happy with it. But you better really know your coins to be able pick a winner or even a fair deal out of ernie's offerings.
my biggest red flag if he knows what he truly is doing, he should be able to tell what flaws the coin has well he does have quality coins but most, if not all, are over-graded and he knows it and I know it. if you like what you see, he is one of those sellers you can sometimes be willing to overpay one
btw, does not look cleaned to me Vess I didn't look up the price but if you need it, that one looks uncleaned to me
It looks EF to me. Red book puts an EF-40 at 300.00. The only thing is, it looks like the rim, left side of the reverse is damaged slightly and the field on the left side on the reverse, under the eagle's wing and above the branch has some markings in it. Probably a fair price.
Right on brother, I have bought items from him as well. You definetely need to know your doo-doo before venturing in his realm. Tom
two pictures, same coin? If what you want them ,please pay me no mind... in looking at photo link you provide I'm seeing 2 different coins, the obverse showing signs of wear points, however the reverse shows no sign of wear. The coins outer rim denticals and reed are thicker on reverse than obverse, looks as if photos are of 2 different coins. My apology if I'm wrong, good luck. Ozarktravler
And I am not as nice as GDJMSP,or Becky for that matter. I have stronger feelings about the way his auctions are presented, particularly in the Colonials, and early USA materiel. I should not, would not, and could not buy from such a seller.
greetings! always a smart idea to ask for advice before purchase. i have yet to make an ebay purchase and have only been to ebay 2 or 3x to browse. i neither know the seller nor his practices. when looking at the coin pic...i honestly could not tell if this pic has been "muled"..(pic obverse of one coin w/ pic reverse of different coin). i do believe that, especially w/ his mention of hairlines, as well as the overall appearance of this coin at an xf level.... that it has at least been cleaned. tho when , i cannot tell. pics are deceptive when reflecting luster or "flatness" of color. i also do note a long scratch close to the liberty pole and the overall appearance honestly seems too clean and uniform especially for both sides of the coin. were i in your position, i would perhaps pass for a better coin for a similar price range. it is neither my money nor my decision and i do not know if the seller will allow a return of the coin after your purchase. always try to err on the conservative side..i do agree that w/o a "details" assignment...i could go to xf40.....but that is ignoring any previous issues mentioned. i honestly think you can do better if you take your time and search. only my very humble opinion and i hope you find a nice seated you like for the price you feel is fair. best wishes, steve
