Is this post-Mint damage?

    Did someone just file down the rim on this quarter, or is there something else going on with this coin?

    They sure did. See how the lines cross each other, and how they expose the copper core in some spots? There isn't anything that could happen during a strike to cause that, but it's exactly what you'd expect to see if someone spent some time grinding away at the edges.

    Also note that the rim around the back isn't weak. If part of the planchet was missing when the coin was struck, there wouldn't be enough metal to get forced all the way into the reverse die, and some of those reverse details would be weak.

    DEFDAM - Definitely Damaged :yack:

    Don't put it back into circulation. Some crazy person might find it and list it on ebay or etsy and state that it is a rare mint error worth hundreds even thousands of dollars :facepalm:

    Someone did a nice job of grinding/sanding it. Steady hands. No damage to Washington's image.
