Nice note RickieB! The quality sure fits with your collection. I dont know about value other then looking in a book I dont follow these notes very closely at all. But i would say based on your knowledge, if you are looking at it, then it must be priced right :D

    Hello Jon and Daggarjon,

    Thanks for the reply.
This is indeed a rare note in this condition andI have little experience with notes priced in this realm. This is purely an investment play for the long term as this note will be passed along to my Son.

It has been my experience that notes in this league are often purchased by Dealers at Auction and a premium is placed on the note for their time they have spent for it's acquisition. It seems that notes in this league are from renound collections like Thomas Flynn or Harry Bass Jr. as well as others.

I am not sure on purchasing notes like these and was wondering if any of you have any knowledge of associated premiums for items like this?
Would you think it was Dealer specific?

    Regards,

    RickieB

I have a $20 from the 1863 issue, mine is probably a Fine or so, but I would absolutely love to upgrade to an Unc, it is a classically lovely note and the vignette of Columbia on top of the Capitol was actually used on several ABN printed notes in Latin America. My only $5, is an 1862, but it has a corner missing.

I say go for it, price is dictated by the rarity of these, they are phenomenally rare in loftier presentation but I would buy it as an enjoyable and meaningful collectable and not as an investment. I never buy things as investments, only as something to enjoy, the artistry and history of these pieces will take care of the rest for you.

As for dealers buying these, yes, that is indeed possible. However a strong collector could come in and blow out the dealers too. In areas where I put a lot more interests than USA notes, I will go higher if I really really must have something, I believe the results of the Millennia collection will reflect that collectors placed strong premiums on choice acquisitions. I have to admit, I never looked at the USA paper money in their auction, I couldn't get past some of the choice and quite scarce foreign notes. Oh, I forgot, I did get a fractional, from the fourth series in 64 EPQ.

WOW RickieB!! That is absolutely amazing! I would so go for it, as you probably will never get the chance to purchase a five dollar note as fine as this one.
And yes, I do see the picture!!

I think this part sums it up well. And I also agree - how often are notes like this available. I am sure you have done some research on this and I'm sure if you pull the trigger you will really enjoy it as a significant piece in your collection. It's like adding a very high end piece of art to an already notable collection.

    Good Luck!

Sorry mate :) cant help you there lol i am real bad at anythign investments wise in numismatics! I collect strictly for the joy. Yes, i do hope everythings value goes up faster then inflation, but its not why i collect.

This note is stunning! But as for if its value would go up based on something other then the dealers own markups... i cant tell you .. sorry.

    RickieB,
What a beautiful note. As far as the price is concerned, I'm not sure. It looks like it will be a nice fit in your collection based just on the condition of the other notes you have posted here. The price is the only possible negative. But if you think it's worth it, (& you must think it's close to being worth it) and you can afford it, buy it. It's a beauty, it's from NY and you're going to pass it along to your son. Sounds like a win, win, win to me.

I wouldn't know where to start, other than looking at Greensheet bid for that note. It does look really sharp though - a very nice gift from father to son!

I think that note is very fairly priced at $5,500. That is not a whole lot over Greensheet Ask, and these types of notes usually cannot be purchased for anywhere around the sheet. Go for it.

Fair enough - I should say that I would expect to pay somewhere around 15-20% over greensheet bid, at the very best. I meant only to get an idea on the ballpark. I'm sure that Rickie did his homework.

off topic, but as a wheat cent picker and small time collector, I am way outclassed in threads like this. Us lower middle class collectors are facing a 40% increase in the price of everything , without a 40% wage increase, leaves nothing for buying even a 5.5 dollar coin. End of rant.
